Frank Gambale has always been very interested in piano or keyboard voicings. He basically says that the keyboard is a very fortunate instrument and that it very hard to create keyboard like voicings on guitar. I have known Frank Gambale for a long time. Back in Canberra (Australia) in the early 80's he was borrowing my Oberheim synth to play synth parts on his recordings. Out of interest Frank listens to sax players for his soloing and keyboard players for chord voicings.
He told me about his alternate tuning on one of his last visits to Australia.
(I am very lucky because I always get free tickets on his tours, Return to Forever being the last one and that was something!) He is pretty savvy by the way with keyboards and voicings. It is the way any chord is voiced that can make the difference. (on any instrument)
This article explains his alternate string arrangement and tuning.
