I am new to this forum and this is my first upload.  Any and all feedback appreciated.  Most of what I know how to do in the studio was learned by my pushing random buttons to see what they do.  I only recently began paying for legit engineering literature and video tutorials.  I wish I would have taken this route in the first place instead of being taught bad habits on youtube.  Hindsight...

Disclaimer:  I love writing, recording, mixing, and attempting to master music; but I am certainly not an expert in any of these departments.  I generally record for my own listening enjoyment, however; Im sure most can relate with my wanting to produce the highest quality audio I can regardless of who is listening to it.  That's why Ive come to a forum full of experienced engineers.  In closing, I humbly accept that I have a lot to learn.

Anyhow, here it is.  Thanks for listening!

Super original. I think your doubled vocals come across just great. There are spots where I feel the acoustic guitar, doing its "triplet" thing, could be lower in volume while you are singing.

Generally, I'm very impressed but also generally the acoustic guitar needs to drop a tad so we can hear the vocals more clearly. There are spots where your vocals overcome this, but other spots where your vocals seem tucked under the acoustic too much.

I love the sections where you abandon a very pretty melodic idea and let it dive into some anti-musical chaos.

nice work!

Nice work Jake, and a nice strong voice you have there.

I agree with Tom in that, in parts, the acoustic guitar is a touch loud... Just a touch.

Nice use of samples

Great job on this one Jacob!

I liked the clear guitar and the panned vocals! The only thing I might change would be the places you add pre recorded sounds as in "there's no place like home"...I would take out the guitar and vocals there because I'm hearing a distinct clash in tones...the two don't seem to fit in the same space.

nice job on recording the guitar. I like this. well done and welcome to the forum. There's some good ears in this place. They helped me a bunch, and still do.

Wow, great response time!  The members of this forum continue to exceed my expectations.

So, overall; the guitar needs to drop a couple of DB's.  I never considered the guitar needing to come down. Probably because I was focused on the vocals possibly being too loud (common theme ive noticed in other members posts, nobody likes the sound of their own voice).  As soon as I went back to the track I could hear clearly what the group was referring to.  This is exactly what I hoped would come from posting the song.  As promised, I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks,
Jake

Im happy to learn of another supporter of the occasional "anti-musical chaos."  The description is spot on!
Oh, and its funny that you mention bass because I really struggled with whether to add bass or not.  I sometimes think I overdue it with bass tracks in general (probably because its my favorite instrument to record).  Since the song started out as mostly acoustic, I talked myself into leaving the bass on the rack for once.  After reading your "where's the bass" question, I am second guessing myself again.  Maybe I will just lay down some bass and see how it sounds.  Anyhow, thanks again Tom!  Having listened to a few of your well mixed tracks previously really makes the compliment you gave mean that much more.

Thanks,
Jake

Unfortunately, I know all to well which part you are referring to.  I tried to crank up the "no place like home" sample to no prevail.  It was still muddy and you can only eq so much before destroying the sound all together.  Maybe I will fade the vocals and synth earlier to make room as you suggested.  The synth sounds like a guitar, but its actually an altered recording of a cheap casio keyboard.  I was in the mood to experiment that day.  Thanks again for the feedback!!

I am a sucker for samples.  When all is said and done, I probably use them in too many songs.  But hey, if it sounds good to me...

Thanks for the feedback and compliment!  I think all musicians need to hear that their vocals aren't as bad as they think they are from time to time.

Take care,
Jake
