After building this I needed to create a tune that used the bottom octave.  So I downloaded an 808 kick library and found myself a good sampler plugin that would pitch match the samples, TX16WX, and made this tune:

While it sounds good without a sub, it really kicks your butt with 30-40Hz content on a good sub (mostly 41Hz E with a 32Hz C section).  If you're not as obsessed with deep bass as I am, just listen for the groove and the live tracked funk bass, my specialty.

Many of the samples are from my own acoustic drum kit, just triggered from MIDI with the sampler.  I used a couple other soundfont sets as well for the percussion and what not.  The rhythm guitar is live tracked and looped, and the bass is straight recorded with a few edits but no loops.

edited "grove" to "groove", don't listen for the trees that bear fruit :)

Nice! I just have my MAckie HR824 monitors, which I have come to love/hate, the hate because they tend to overproduce bass frequencies.

So I don't have a sub, but I did hear some thudding in the region you mention. You clearly are using roundwounds which have a lot of upper end bite, and I liked how that cut through. And you've obviously got some amazing bass chops!

My favorite band, a guilty pleasure at that, is Level 42, and I am going to assume you have heard of them?

cheers,

Thanks Tom! I've heard the HR824's, they have no problem hitting 40Hz.  Pretty impressive punch from mid size near fields really.

Definitely round wounds on a Musicman Stingray there, always played with a whole lot of attack.  I've actually never listed to Level 42, I'll have to check that out!

Funky bass!  You've got a bit of Wooten in them slaps!  Well done sir!

Sorry, no woofer insight.  Though I went through a Sunn O)))) phase a few years back and lived through the sub frequencies to tell the story.
