A prize given in 2016 could better represent work done in or around the year 2016.    ?
 
Otherwise, wait until next year, when the 2017 Nobel for Literature goes to the guy who painted on the caves at Lascaux.

That's not how they normally do it. None of the Nobel prizes (with the possible exception of the peace prize) seems concerned with how "current" the "work" of the winner are. I think that's a good thing, there's enough prizes and contests that have that perspective. I think the prize winners have to be alive when being chosen, but that's about it. I'm not an expert on this, but that's how I understand it.
 
Anyway, I think it's nice that song lyrics gets some recognition from the academy. Don't think that has happened before.
