Oh, I think it will circle around for a while.

Upon careful examination of the circumstances surrounding the release of X3, I find that I might indeed wait out the first Gibson managed version of the software which will be, X4 or titled differently.

I have a sneaking unsubstantiated belief that Roland has pushed this X3 out the door to grab some upgrade fees and see if they can put themselves in a better position to negotiate with Gibson.

I would like to see what Cakewalk does, when acquired by Gibson.  For all we know, X3 could be now, and X4 in another year because the direction of the software may about to undergo a radical change.

I would expect a new release in another year.

Adobe bought Syntrillium in May of 2003 and Adobe Audition was released on 18 August 2003. It had bug fixes but no new features, and was essentially a more polished Cool Edit Pro 2.1. I'd expect Gibson/Tascam to do a similar thing once they get their name all over the program and packaging.

IRC, that was also a free upgrade for existing Syntrillium customers.

yes it was and I'm hoping for a free upgrade to Gibson/Tascam too !!

Well, that would be if they slap a TASCAM label on the box of the existing X3 product, which really doesn't mean anything since you're not going to be running X3 if you haven't upgraded to it.

I wouldn't worry about that. Gibson's CEO is a long time user of SONAR and so is Craig Anderton the CMO.

I've have upgraded to X3 Producer, I'm just waiting for the boxed version to arrive before installing it. Hopefully the name change will occur with X3b or X3c...
