  • Routing audio between software packages (e.g. Sonar to mixbus)

I wonder if that is doable: route multi-channel audio from Sonar to another application e.g. track and mix channels to bus stems in Sonar, but instead of bouncing-exporting-importing stems to Mixbus, chain the 2 applications dynamically so that Mixbus picks up the audio channels of the Sonar stems and acts as summing box (plus EQ, compression, tape saturation).

Basically something like you can to with MIDI using these virtual MIDI port tools ... but I think AISO doesn't like something like this, does it?

It may be doable with Virtual Audio Cable (VAC). I use it to route system audio (Spotify, movies etc) through PedalBoard2, which I use to host the ARC2 vst so I can listen to music with my speaker correction. It was a little complicated for me to get to grips with, and I know I'm not using VAC to its full potential, but I believe that the whole idea behind it is so that you can route audio from anywhere to anywhere. Might want to look into it.

I recently tried the demo and couldn't figure it out (I'm stupid), but I think VAC should be able to host ARC2 as well. I would love to figure it out and leave ARC2 on all the time. That would be my favorite upgrade of the year.

Another option (that I've not tried) is Jack for Windows.

Mixbus 2.5 came with it. 3.x does not.

Probably not any different than VAC in concept. Hard to say if it is easier.

I've used jack on a Mac where I have routed Logic into Mixbus . It worked very good , yet, I have to admit it was pretty complex to get up to speed on how to configure the routing in both programs and then do a step by step config of the  sequence of orderly events that need to take place to have things work smoothly  . On that side of things it did work nice ...I might go back and get better at it .....
I didn't try Jack in windows because it is pretty much 32 bit ...64 bit may still be Beta ...

VAC can't host VST's but PedalBoard2 can - you just load ARC in Pedalboard and select VAC as your audio device. Actually it's a little more complicated but if a clutz like me can get it up and running I'm sure you'll be able to work it out. Another thing I did was write a little script to automatically turn VAC and Pedalboard on and off so I can do it from my taskbar automatically instead of having to turn them on an off manually when I switch from Sonar to Spotify for instance. I prefer to host ARC in Sonar when I'm mixing. It all works great and yes, music and videos sound amazing through ARC. It even makes a huge difference when watching video tutorials on YouTube because the voice is less boomy.

I also added Sonarworks to my Pedalboard 2 setup so I can run Spotify through my calibrated cans. Heaven! If you do get VAC and Pedalboard2 and get stuck then PM me and I will attempt to help!

Thanks all for the feedback.

Great, Kenny, that you tried it and got it to work - so it really is tempting to "waste" a little time on it.

However, I'm all windows 64bit ... any idea if that 32/64 bit version of JACK might be worth a try, or do I need to wait for a full blown 64 bit version?

Rob,
Yes Jack worked very good .   I was pleasantly surprised.
For absolute full disclosure ,
I had posted a question on the Mixbus forum asking how can I use MainStage as my amp simulator and how do I get it to record my processed sounds in Mixbus 3 in real time .
Troy Chapman  over at The Mixbus forum actually went above and beyond the call of duty helping me out ...
Troy spelled it out first too me as a written post on the Mixbus forum ...
I had missed a few key points w his post / details , and was I somewhat confused .
Troy went through the trouble of creating a step by step U tube video describing every detail of the process using Jack , Logic and Mixbus 3 simultaneously in real time on a Mac ...
Since I have have Logic I did everything Troy had mapped out as per the video he made ...

Here's the video Troy created which I just hunted down for this post ..

I hope this video may shed some light as far as some of the process go's ...using a Win OS , there may be a few key differences .

Jack has to be started first and you will still have to route your internal ins and out is in both Mixbus and the primary DAW ...
Also your audio driver dialog  will probably need to be selected for your Windows DAWs as per the Mac video  ....

One great thing about Troys video is he goes into a lot of depth and detail on the Mixbus routing end of setting this config up.

For the record , I am a SONAR user primarily . I have yet to try this type of workflow in Windows 10 64 ...
I have been doing mostly stems and individual track exports of my SONAR projects into Mixbus 3...
On the other side of the coin , I'm very happy that I was able to do this whole process in Logic combined with Mixbus 3 ...
I already know it works and I have a working set up already able to do this in OSX...
For me to get better at this in OSX , I would have to study my way around Logic much more to be comfortable using it ...
SONAR is still my #1

Anyway, It is entirely possible that Jack may work fine in Win 64 ....I was going by what The Jack Web page had up as info .
Eventually I may step up to the plate and try this in out Windows when I can create the time to learn this type workflow .
There seems to be a lot of freedom in adopting this type of workflow once all the in's and outs are configured correctly , learned and mastered .

If Jack is not up to speed in 64 bit , One of my Win 10 computers has a few 32 bit DAW's on it I have no problem trying Jack 32  out on this machine ..

Good Luck , I hope something here may have been of value and a help too you .

all the best,

Kenny

I had VAC confused with this...

It does host VSTs, and should work. Heres a video for it.

Hi Kenny,

thanks. thanks. thanks. and thanks again.

just watched the video and this is exactly what I was looking for :-)

I will definitely give this a try with Sonar to Mixbus. I did send a mail to the JACK people asking about the 64bit version and will wait if I hear back from them. If not I just try the 32/64bit that I can download.

But as Tony said in the video: use Logic/Sonar as a tape machine and mix in Mixbus would be really something I could see as a great tool!
