  • Something brewing at Spectrasonics? (p.13)

There has been an incredible amount of whining about this project even from people I didn't expect to be whining about it. It's a little disappointing how some people are reacting.

That said, am I disappointed in the announcement? Sure. My first thought was "Okay, another piano/key VST. I'll pass." but as I watched the video, I realized I was wrong about my first assessment.

This is not another keys VST. Sure, they have a couple common pianos and keyboards (which sound much better than anything else I've heard so far, by the way), but most of this was a passion project based on very rare, not widely sampled instruments that they meticulously restored to where they could be "Spectrasonics Quality" with the highest of standards so to call it "another keys library" is so very wrong. If nothing else, this is very different and held to the same standards as everything they put out.

Will I buy it? Not right away. A lot of the keyboards in this library I know I wouldn't use. I don't use a lot of Rhodes or Clavs in my music. However, once Skippy and Matt get their hands on it and start blending it with Omnisphere 2, a whole new world of sound is going to open up which might make it worth buying. Plus, with a Musicians Friend coupon or JRRShop always having deals for Spectrasonics stuff so if I can buy it at a good price, I might do that.

Overall, I see the R&B and Worship communities benefiting the most from the core set and they will eat it up. Those are both multi-million dollar communities so those alone will likely cover the investment of the product Spectrasonics put into it. Film composers will also likely invest in it because as one person said over at VI-Control: it puts high quality sounds right inside an engine they are already using so they don't need to search through tons of plugins to find a good keys sound to use on their time sensitive project.

I have a feeling this is another home run for Spectrasonics even if we don't see it right now because of the current disappointment that it wasn't something else we might have wanted to see them do.

Will this start a piano price war?

Depends on the price - have we heard anything about that?

More than I hoped, but not bad considering what they're offering.
Out of my budget at least for the near term.

Pass. For good. For a real keyboard player this is probably the shizzle on a twizzle.

Just as I'd predicted: something cool I can't afford.

I've got a lot of EPs and acoustic pianos already, so it won't be a priority. But it would be nice to have a one-stop source for most keyboard needs, since this does for keyboards what Trilian did for bass.

In fact, if I had this I'd be tempted to violate my longstanding rule of no laptops on stage. Yeh, it's 400 bucks, but to put that in perspective it handily beats my $4,000 workstation on EPs.

In the past 2 years I'm sure that I have spent more than $399 on Piano libraries.
I've got an EW Piano Platinum that I've yet to register maybe I'll sell it.

Yea, I am thinking the same, but not for the stage, for the lounge, I think with a bit of smart shopping, I could get a 88 key  keyboard/workstation/electric piano with midi out, a suitable laptop, a audio interface such as a ur22, some monitor speakers, and have a lot of fun practicing piano with much better sounds than your $4000 workstation for less than half the price.

For everything new including shipping...
500 AUD for Spectronics Keystation (I would wait for it to go on sale)
180 AUD for Steinberg UR 22 (have a UR44)
1000 AUD for new laptop that meets recommended specs (have this)
1200 AUD for Roland A88 (could go cheaper and get a $425 AUD for a nektar LX88 or 600 AUD for a P45 Yamaha)
800 AUD for Rokit/JBL/Behringer 8" monitor speaker pair (have this, but too lazy to move them from my daw but I could route it out into my Yamaha 679 amp based sound system intead I guess)
20 AUD for Hosa speaker leads
So for 3700 AUD which is approx 2800 USD, could have a very sweet little piano practice setup/second studio, for much less than the 4000 USD workstation.  That would leave some spare change for more sounds, better laptop, or Komplete 11 Ultimate which is 1199 USD at sweetwater (though would need more drive space on laptop then).

Not that it matters, not going to do that yet, getting a decent piano practice setup is my xmas sale time project.  But it would be nice!

Ok, time to stop dreaming..

So...a pro studio can now have a Kemper/AxeFX, Toontrack/Slate, etc drums, Keyscape.....   then they just need people that can use 'em in a creative situation, like the demo showed.  Where was the Jon Lord B3?... or did I miss that?
