I stayed away from X2 because of what I heard of Take Lanes.  I am in the middle of a project now, so won't upgrade to X3 for a while.  That will give me a chance to hear/read about Take Lanes.  The Melodyne inclusion sounds good.

What's wrong with the Take Lanes?? I use them all the time in X2a, they work great!

Hi Noel,

My main issues with Sonar are all related to bitbridge...

Bitbridge adds un-noticed latency on instruments, it's not compatible with so many instruments/FX.

And makes Sonar go white-screen several times a day, it's really your DAW achille's heel (if I can say that),
I wish I could go all the way 64 bit, but there are so many little 32bit plugins I just can't let go ... ;)

So is bitbridge still in ? or has it been revised?

If ever you can share that info, that would make the difference between a X3 upgrade for me, or not.

Cheers !

So you probably work with one clip in one track method. If not, you must missing rebuild function

Good to see Noel add some insight to the improvements under the hood, so to speak. This is the kind of stuff that makes my socks run up and down my legs   and makes me reconsider my sit back and wait strategy.  I only run a part-time studio but I'm dead serious about my tools and their ability to help me make a client sound good and do that as quickly as possible.

Cheers everyone,

I'm with SvenArne ... was just browsing through to see what all the rumblings are about. I've been running along quite well with X2, but now, I'm getting all excited about X3, and don't know why!

With regard VST3 and Waves, I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean reinstalling all of my existing Waves plugs? If so, does that mean I'll lose all of my Waves plug settings in projects? I'm also curious as to how Waves plugs will work in Sonar X3 in general, particularly with regard to some of the glitchy GUI operation. I really hope that is all fixed.

Using the VST3 versions of Waves plugins should be completely transparent. If you have the VST3 versions installed, SONAR will scan them automatically. Additionally, there is full compatibility with projects using VST2 versions of Waves plugins. By default when you load older projects containing Waves VST2 plugins, SONAR will automatically migrate these to their VST3 equivalents, if available and all the plugin settings will be retained. We worked with the waves devs to ensure that this migration mechanism is seamless. Automatic migration is optional however so if you don't want to do this there is an option to disable it in preferences.

Regarding the glitchy UI, that issue is also resolved. There was a parameter feedback loop with some of the plugins causing that.
BTW talking about UI, there is another nice improvement. Resizing plugin windows in SONAR now doesn't flicker like it did before.

Bitbridge is still there for handling legacy 32 bit plugins. Regarding the latency there is no way around that - its the nature of the beast to handle the 32-64 interprocess bridging technology so to speak. With VST3 there is even less of a reason to bridge except for old legacy unsupported plugins. The good news is that we now own the bitbridge source code (it was licensed earlier) so in future updates we will address some of the remaining issues.

Regarding VST3, I will publish an article listing the features we implemented later. SONAR doesn't support the Steinberg specific features like expression maps, but our implementation is goes beyond what other non Steinberg VST3 hosts do today. We chose to implement all the more important and useful features. Sample accurate automation, silent buffer CPU savings, sidechaining, plugin resizing support, automatic VST2-3 migration, hierarchical parameter organization and plugin categorization are a few that that we did. The work in this area however goes well beyond just VST3. The entire VST engine was overhauled so many of these benefits apply to VST2 plugins as well. e.g. SONAR now fully supports mono sidechain plugins both in VST2 and VST3. There are some industry firsts with general plugin management as well. Plugin scanning is now transparent and automatic so you can launch the app and start working immediately in seconds, without waiting for a boring plugin scan operation to finish. Hardcore plugin addicts will be happy to know that there are no more limits to the counts of plugins listed in menus and the browser as well :)

Wow, lots of exciting information in that paragraph!

It's wierd, I don't have this issue with FLstudio 11 (which also can wrap 64bit plugins in a x32 DAW, maybe their situation is different)

I have not much problem with the fact that there "is" a small latency (it's only about 500 samples), but I do have an issue when I bounce those tracks in place, and that this latency is not compensated. I'm sure this can be resolved, especially since you guys own the code (which is indeed a very good news!)

Are you saying that a VST3 DAW can natively run most 32 bit plugins ?
Can you elaborate or point me where I can find more info about this?

Also, I'm sure some of us doing music to picture would like details about the new video player enhancements ..;)

Thanks again! Congratulations, you just sold me an X3 update!
