... And the possibilities reach far beyond Melodyne - for instance, Presonus have just bought Notion, and it seems likely that they'll link that into S1 using ARA - this would be fantastic (although pure specualtion). Instead of tacking on half-arsed features that don't really work, ARA allows devs to integrate the real thing with their DAW.
D'oh!!! This was the object of my ARA speculation. Thinking was that if Melodyne could edit Sonar audio, why couldn't an ARA compliant notation plug edit Sonar MIDI data. And here I thought there was some sort of relationship between Cakewalk and Notion. Let's hope there is another notation company out there interested in developing a notation plug.
ARA (Audio Random Access) gives the plugin a broader view into the hosts audio stream than the single instant in time at the current playback position. While it's pretty cool for giving a plug a context view, rather than an instantaneous view of audio...I doubt that it will be useful at all for notation, since that's MIDI related. (That is unless we're also considering audio to MIDI conversion.)
Per Noel - and perhaps I'm misunderstanding:
"I would venture to say that the ARA implementation in SONAR goes even further. SONAR support true independent ARA regions - i.e you can make copies of ARA clips and edit them independently.
Also the ARA editing and MIDI integration is very deep, with full drag and drop support, and integrated live preview and scrub inside the melodyne editor. Additionally we were careful to not make ARA support exclusive to Melodyne. Any plugin that supports the ARA spec will be available as a region based effect in SONAR, so the implementation is very open. I worked very closely with the Celemony team all through this year and I have to say that they were a wonderful and committed team of people to work with. There have been many fixes and enhancements to ARA as a result of this collaboration, some of which were included in the last Melodyne update."
