This is a song, written by a lady in South Africa and sung and recorded (vocals)by a lady in Bali.  I was asked about the mix on the original song which was lacking clarity and was rather dark and muddy. This is a mix completely redone here in my studio. Many of the original tracks were retained. Some are new and some were simply muted/deleted from this project to simplify it.

EDIT:  after much feedback from a few forums and also from the singer on this, we decided to do some additional changes to the mix...... nothing major, but hopefully in the right direction. There's a whole new bass track which gives this song a totally different groove and feel.  This is very likely the final version.  Much  appreciation to those who listen and commented.  Good ears in this place.

This will be going on a CD project.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, that was a great mix. At one point I thought the piano part could do with being a bit more over to the left... just a bit. I dunno... It's just that a lot of stuff sits in the middle. Having said that, you'd expect most of that to sit in the middle anyway. Bass - in the middle. Kick and snare - in the middle. Main vocals - in the middle. Guitars are panned left and right as best as I can tell, but could they go further? The Hammond is well to the right, and is why I'm thinking the piano could go further left.

But, hey! I'm no pro... very far from it, and it's been such a long time since I've mixed anything like this.

A strong song though, and well worthy of any CD, in my opinion.

cheers

nice tune......
and a nice flowing groove....

if anything, i'd bring up the level of the drums across the board.
give the kick a bit more thump.....

cool stuff.... I actually backed some levels down on the mix that's up there now.... Joanne is the controller of the final mix decisions so I'm following her directions.

It's understandable that the B3 sounds louder on one side or panned... it's actually a real stereo mix.... and looking at the wave you can see that the 2 channels are not the same.... I did pan the acoustics and the vocals.... everything else is close or centered.

I'm with you Bat.... love me some nice drums in a mix.

This song blew me away.  Joanne wrote this about growing up in the Zimbabwe bush wars of the 70's as a child scared out of her wits. powerful song and I love the songs this lady writes. It's cool that she asked me to help with the final mixing on this.....

Nice mix, clear and well-separated. Sounds a bit scooped on my monitors, though.

Sounded spot on to me, Herb.  Really nice song too.

Bit....they were down about a db... from flat. the singer's EQ has a slight rise.... going flat on the mains warmed it a bit. Nice call

Philz.... yeah, some really nice writing and melody work..... kinda wish I could claim some writing credits on this but I can't. I did help to write and record Fools Errand by the same writer. That's gonna be the title track I think for this CD.... this song is the last song on the disk... being released soon from South Africa and all proceeds are going to the Rhino conservation group.

I was really looking for something I could give feedback on so I wouldn't feel left out, but I agree with Phil; definitely "spot on."  If you let me know when its available for purchase I will buy a copy.

I certainly will announce it here. I do know that all the proceeds from the album/CD will be going to a Rhino conservation group in South Africa where JC lives.
