  • Do any of you still use External Insert, or have you forgotten about it? (p.2)

As a recent convert from Pro Tools HD(20 plus yr PT user) to a Platinum user this is one area I have been a little apprehensive over.I am sure I will fully integrate my outboard into Splat over time.Once i get over the insert plug in jitters I am sure I will fully enjoy all the Sonar has to offer.

I use it sometimes, though more for oddities, like running things through guitar pedals than any serious outboard gear.

I need to try that.

I use it when I want to pass something through analogue filters. Sometimes guitar fx, especially fuzz/distortion and nothing sounds quite like a Deluxe Electric Mistress.

hmm... I don't really have any outboard gear to use it with but I've been starting to think about experimenting with my Korg AXFX pedal because it has an expression pedal on it and some actually not so bad tones. Of course it is destructive if I used it on the way in but MAAAAYBE due to the nature of the unit it could garner decent results via the external inserts (as opposed to other more traditional stomp boxes that suck when used in effects loop scenarios).

Might try it out because the idea of ext inserts always intrigued me and it if successful would give me a non destructive wah/volume pedal to use until I can muy a proper MIDI pedal controller.

Nice!  If I ever get off my butt and get my old Akai Reel-to-Reel fixed I want to try sending a signal out to that and see how it compares to some of the Tape Sims.  I assume I'll be able to account for the delay between the record and playback heads with the delay compensation.  If not,  I can always nudge the audio manually after the fact.  Has anyone tried this?

Hi SF_Green,
I haven't tried it with tape but it should work. I use the delay compensation with E.I. all the time.

When you do it I'd love to hear some comparison files.

Since you admitted to the jitters I will too :-) With a shout out to my fellow Texan AT, I recently picked up a Warm Audio 1176 and Pultec EQ clone, running them through the Insert path on a ISA One PreAmp, into a Saffire Pro 40. I am really jazzed about the difference I'm hearing on the signal going in, albeit that I'm still playing with the EQ and trying to wrap my head around it all, having never used *real* outboard gear before. I've yet to use the EI, cause I don't have a patch bay and don't want to go climbing behind my rack just yet. But I will soon!

If you guys aren't using External Insert to connect your hardware to Sonar, what are you using?

I've recently been venturing in the hardware guitar and bass pedal realm. I use External Insert with the MXR M80 and Darkglass B7K.

Disclaimer: I am a neophyte with using external hardware with Sonar. The ISA One Preamp has an Insert function by which you can create a "channel strip", so to speak, in my case, Preamp>Compressor>EQ, before it hits the Saffire Pro 40. I've been testing it with different settings, etc. Highly impressed and jazzed to the hilt with the quality and the difference it makes. The All-In function on the Warm Audio WA-76 is out of this world for vocals. Will be testing with mic'd guitar amps this weekend.
