Just an idea.. IRC is Internet Relay Chat, somewhat like AIM, but more chatroom like. I'll set up a channel for you guys if you'd like, but not a network. :P Tried that, bandwidth kills quickly. Anywho... It's all set up now, if you want just connect to irc://irc.stormirc.net, channel #cakewalk

Nothing official.. Just a faster way of non-official tech support, and conversation.

Just out of curiosity - why would you want to splinter/segment this community?

This forum seems to have not only good user participation, but the CW staff jumps in now and then (when they feel appropriate reason to do so).

It seems to me trying to pull people to another site - in another protocol, is, well to be frank, divisive.

I don't doubt your sincerity and wanting to be helpful, but it seems counterproductive to me.
Just my opinon, of course.

It's not that.. It's sort of an alternative method of support. I personally love this community, and wouldn't leave it for nearly anything. I have no intentions on dragging this community apart. Sort of a more 1 on 1 support thing as well. Technically, it's not a site.. It's a chat server. It's pretty old too. I remember the old days of IRC.

(Woah, for a second there I misread it as "I doubt you're trying to be helpful." . I hate when I misread things.)

Sorry to necro a thread, but I wish there was an IRC channel somewhere for cakewalk users as well. I've got a simple little question and for some reason Google is being of absolutely no help in finding an answer today. Oh well, guess I'll try opening a thread for it somewhere in here.
 

Just an FYI, for those who aren't aware, prior to this forum there was a Cakewalk newsgroup, which I know is not the same as IRC, but Cakewalk abandoned the newsgroup when they set up this forum. I'm sure that some folks prefer IRC, just as many users of old preferred the newsgroup, but I don't see Cakewalk supporting anything but this forum. And honestly, as cool as IRC was, it's older technology now, and not as pretty and flashy as these graphic forums.     

As someone who has both owned and moderated very large forums and chatrooms, I can say with certainty that having a chatroom and a forum does not split or segment a community. It gives people another method of communication. I personally find active chatrooms to be much more binding of a community than a forum is and sometimes real time conversation is much more helpful than making a post and waiting till someone is interested enough to reply.
 
It's certainly not for everyone and typically only a small portion of a community takes part in a chat, but you'll often find that the people who are part of that chat become a very tight knit community that is an asset to whatever community they are part of.
 
That being said, I'd certainly be all for a chatroom. I think it would highly benefit the community here.

Actually, many have gone back to including IRC as a chat service because many companies or organizations have realized how important chat communities are. IRC is important because graphical web based chat clients are resource heavy on both the server and the client side of things. They also enable people to use the chat without having to keep a loaded browser open and idle in the chat which many browser clients won't do.
 
IRC hasn't been around for 20 years for nothing and it's getting more popular once again because we're realizing that it's a very good communication tool. In fact, a few of the 14 rooms that are currently open in my mIRC client right at this moment, a few of them have between 75-100 clients in them and about 20-25 active people at any given time.
 
Of course, I wouldn't expect those numbers for a Cakewalk based chat. If it's anything like the Reason chat, there might be about 20 users logged in with about 5 active at any given time because it's a bit of a niche'.
