Hi Guys,

I get crashes constantly on X2.  I have a 64 bit machine, but am running X2 as 32 bit (the 64 bit version installed, but would never open, so I uninstalled it and installed 32 bit).  I run 32 bit commercial plugins (Ik Multimedia, Waves).  I've tweaked my machine for music and have all accelerators, networks, etc turned off.  Lately when I try to open ANY Cakewalk plugin my project crashes!  I am soooooo frustrated.  Any thoughts, or is anyone else experiencing anything like this?

The first thing I would suggest is to undo all the changes you made to the OS in an attempt to "maximize" performance. With Win7 and the CPU you have those adjustments aren't needed and maybe causing you problems.

Are you using ASIO? I have used 64 bit with a lesser machine and have no problems. Could be a memory issue also. Run memtest to see if your memory is ok.

+1 to this. I don't know how many times I have had to go back and undo my "optimizations", because I would end up having problems. Lately I've pretty much just let the OS do a normal startup, and Sonar has been rock solid.

There is the real possibility that both x64 and x32bit installations of the plug-ins are in your registry, etc.  When you stall x64 SONAR and then x32 SONAR (or vice versa) you can see what looks like duplicate entries in the registry except that one set is in the "Cakewalk (x86)" entries and the other under just "Cakewalk" referring to the x64 installation.  This can be verified by going into Windows [File] Explorer and finding duplicates of the "Shared Plugins", "Shared Utilities," etc., in the Programs|Cakewalk and the Programs (x86)|Cakewalk folders respectively.  Since you uninstalled the x64 version of SONAR, then you may not see the former folder in your directory.  Nonetheless, they are still there in the registry.  I know this because I spent a great deal of time fixing Pentagon 1 in both versions of X2 (x86/32 and x64).  In the end, I cleaned out all entries of Pentagon 1, deleted all related files/folders and then reinstalled Pentagon 1 from the SONAR X2 x32 install and then the x64 installation.  Now it works perfectly in both versions.

Just something to consider...easy enough by just searching your registry to confirm.

Kind regards,

Living room rocker may have hit the nail on the head.

But since you say you installed Sonar64 and it wouldn't even start up, I wonder about your OS and other programs you may have had running at the time.

Since it sounds like this is a dedicated computer, I suggest you give consideration to completely starting over on this computer, reloading EVERYTHING - including the OS.

As noted above, once Windows 7 came along, the need for the raft of tuning optimizations to run Sonar vanished, and some of these can actually cause problems.

Since there is NO history here in the forum of Sonar not even loading on computers running Windows 7 - (quite the opposite, Windows 7 is very friendly to Sonar) - I suspect you have inadvertently jazzed things up to a point beyond where Sonar can function properly.

Back up your projects and any other data files and folders you want to retain, and nuke it all and just reload everything - this time WITHOUT tinkering, and then see where things stand.

There are lots of folks here in the forum who will go to great lengths to assist you, but at the moment I am am not sure anybody can do much for you until you get back to a 'normal' state of affairs with Windows.

Again - if the kinds of failure you are experiencing were at all common, you would have seen evidence of it in the forum posts, and I just have not seen that.

I completely wipe out my OS drive and do a clean reinstall of everything about every 6 months just to keep everything in proper order.

id do it again as Robert is suggesting.
if sonar wasn't installing in 64 bit mode, you probably should have gone looking for a solution rather than just installing the 32 bit version instead.
sorry not downing on you :)
just making that clear.
so I would start a re format and clean os and re build from there.
