Okay peeps, here I am again, offering up yet another piece of not so stunning electronic pap. I was rummaging through an older hard drive in the search for some old WRK files, just to see if I had anything interesting, and I stumbled across a CWB file of OB-Wan. I remember doing it, some ten or more years ago, but I was also in a band at the time and my "solo project" suffered a tad.

What makes this pap different from all my other pap is I recorded this as audio, not MIDI, which is what I normally do. There are therefore some "quantization" issues, which I could have fixed by messing around with the audio files. But I decided that I want to leave it as-is.

It was also recorded using just my Oberheim OB-12 virtual analog synth. Twelve layered tracks in all. No, it's not what I would call a "show piece" example of what the awesome OB-12 can do... But I enjoyed doing it.

Also, the OB-12 has a S/PDIF output so I was able to record into my Sonar 6 PE within the digital domain.

All I did to "finish" this piece off was to add an instance of Pro-Q and Pro-L to  the master bus. I monitor on headphones so I add Pro-Q to add low cut and get rid of unwanted bass, and high cut (although that's probably not as important). Pro-L is there because I find it easier to maximise the levels once I have a general mix sorted.

No other effects were used. The only effects that can be heard are part of the OB-12 patches.

Comments would be nice, although I'm not sure what peeps could say really... This is not one of my better pieces, I just wanted to share...

cheers

Cool stuff, Andy.  I'm a sucker for analog synths, myself.

Thanks for stopping by Phil

If you got through all seven minutes of that you deserve a medal

Reallycool stuff Andy!

I think this would make an excellent backdrop for a synth solo.

Ah ha! I never thought of that... Because it was an old project my mind had tagged it "finished." I'll have a think about that and if I go for it, it will give me an excuse for dusting off my OB-12 (assuming it still works...)

Thanks for taking the time to listen

what would be really cool,
would be to edit this thing down to 3:45 length,
best parts, somehow edited together...
with a smooth vocal and harmony throughout....
a little bit of electric guitar fill here and there

nice sounds,
those oberheims just sound so good to me,

Even though it's an old audio recording, there are still a lot of things you could layer onto it if you wanted to. My instinct would be bring in some organic percussion.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

I saw this last night but didn't reply straight away because I wanted to have a further think about the suggestions made on what could be done with OB-Wan.

My conclusion is, that however great those suggestions are, this particular piece was kind of an exercise for me in a) just using the one synth and b) recording to audio instead of MIDI. And this is what came out of that creative "womb" at the time... Yeah, it was "birthed" LOL.

I think the best thing to do would be to use OB-Wan as inspiration to try something else in a similar vein, now that I am trying to get back to composing. Still use the OB-12 as the main instrument, but also dust off my JP-8000 as well. I've also got a Boss GT-5 effects pedal doing nothing, so I bring that out of retirement too. And while I'm at it, I've got a Lexicon MPX-500 outboard effects unit doing absolutely nothing...

So now, I guess, I'm working up to an all audio composition using hardware synths, guitar and external effects, and therefore use nothing at all within Sonar except EQ and compression/limiting (if it needs it).

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to listen to my music. I know it's not easy for some simply because of the genre of "music" I attempt to replicate... It's not everyone's cup of tea, for sure

I, too, am a sucker for analog synths.  This piece evolves in a way that sucked me in and left me wanting more.  You have very good ears for mixing, considering that you use headphones.  Keep it up!
