Hi all, thinking of taking the plunge and getting the vs100 interface for my Sonar. At present using the old roland ua 100 with a super mpu64 midi unit.
I Use a Peavey PV8 mixer with DX7 synthesiser, wx7 wind controller, microphones and plugins.
Need to be able to record from my mixer and control the sonar X1/2.
Any advice will be much appreciated and if I am picking the best option with the VS100 for my situation.
 

I would suggest that you look to picking an interface that has enough inputs to where you could skip the use of the mixer by keeping each instrument/mic on its own input to the interface, for the following reasons:
 
1.  You would be able to change volume's to your heart's content, since each instrument is on its own separate track.
2.  Each instrument could have its own effects chain, using the included plugin effects
3.  You could rerecord and/or otherwise edit any individual instrument as needed, independently of other recorded instruments or vocals.
 
There may be another way of approaching things though, if money is really tight.  You CAN use an interface that has a smaller number of inputs, and still skip using the mixer, by adjusting how you approach your tracking.
 
What I mean is that near as I can tell, your use of the mixer is because you are trying to record multiple inputs at the same time, and you have more instruments/mics to input than you have inputs on your current interface.
 
IF the above is correct, then perhaps if you recorded one instrument at a time, you could entirely skip the mixer (and probably some noise), as each instrument would get plugged into the interface when it is time for that instrument to be recorded.
 
This would allow you complete control over things, as I had noted above with the bullet points, and this would result in a much better result, in all likelihood.
 
So, review and reflect on these potential choices - IF money permits than get an interface with more inputs, and if it does not, then look to adjusting your recording approach.

Thanks for the remarks. A little more info is that I use a maximum of 8 channels. and use the mixer for live work with an external multi effects box. So I don't totally have to rely on a PC .

I'm not sure what you are asking - you use your peavy mixer and want to pipe that into your interface/SONAR?  The VS 100 can do that.  I'm not sure if the peavy will color the sound - it sounds like a live mixer, but if you can live w/ that it should work fine.  The vs 100 only has 4-6 inputs - I can't remember which. That is not enough to leave all your toys plugged in at once, tho a patchbay can help.  The VS converters are good, as are the 2 preamps.  The effects - not so much IMHO.
 
What you are paying for is the moving fader, which is very nice.  The one I had felt better than the top of the line's vs 700's faders.  But that is more of a mixing controller, not a live thing (tho anything is possible if you invest the time).
 
The VS should work well as a home interface for SONAR, as a SONAR controller and as a location recorder (you record directly to a memory card).  It does all tasks well, so it is more a sum of the parts rather than any single one.
