Will touch screens enhance an enthusiasm for presets?

I think you have a point. The scenario is feasable.

I don't think that presets will ever magically suit the exact need(s) for specific sound sculpting.  Just as every song is different, every instance of processing is different.  Presets, no matter how "precise," will get you close but tweaking will be necessary in every instance.  It would be rare if it at all possible that a preset will match perfectly to fix a problem or properly enhance a sound.  If it were that easy, then we would all be making great mixes.

Kind regards,

Personally, I would probably be more likely to edit presets if I could directly access a plugin's widgets via touch, quickly going from widget to widget or accessing multiple widgets at once.   Granted, my only first-hand experience with touch in this realm in the new Mackie mixer that uses a docked i-pad.  It took a few minutes, but once I got semi-used to the finger pressure and movement, it was very nice to control the faders and knobs.   And I can imagine it would be that much better on a full-sized monitor.

It's almost 2014, Mike.  Things are moving forward whether you like it or not, for better or worse, richer or poorer, and in sickness or health.

Imagine, instead of fumbling up and down to tweak an equalizer setting with a thumb, people can choose something from an incredible and comprehensive list of presets and get exactly what sounds the best for anything they are doing.

wasn't "touch" brought into the game to quickly adjust a knob or fader??? like something that you would do on a real device??? sort of intuitively?

If you can't do that with touch and you end up just browsing through presets ... well, then throw out your touch screen. you could use a cheap foot switch for browsing presets and have your hands free for beer & smokes

to get "touch" off the ground and make it fly, i think they would first have to reinvent the entire sonar gui. i could see "touch" work with really well designed interfaces e.g. fabfilter pro-q, but that is just a "small" application with a single purpose. sonar got way too many options (which is great!) but only a few you can successfully work with in "touch" mode ... so the mouse will stay with us (especially as all the contro surfaces are also left out in the desert to die slowly but certainly) ...

I saw Seth Perlstein (remember him?) at the 2013 NAMM show demonstrating a 27ish inch touch screen using X2a. I saw him move faders, adjusting eq etc. No gui changes were required for that.

What was funny; I did not see Seth use one preset.

Go figure.

I think that making it easier to quickly dial in parameters makes presets less alluring, not more.
