The problem was as sharke mentioned - I hadn't set the MIDI channel of track 2 correctly. I've done this & now all is working fine.
 
It's a bit embarassing, being a long-time Cakewalk user and not being able to figure this out but it's now solved :)

Glad it's working for you now....I've had MIDI channel confusion in the past too, so no need to be embarrassed......in fact I still have to think carefully about it when I'm routing stuff. 

Now... save the result as a Track Template   

Mistakes are CRITICAL in the learning process.  We know much of what we know from getting bit in the booty at some time in the past, and learning from the mistakes along the way.
 
Glad it is sorted out for you - bet you learned from it, and if it happens to you again, you will hopefully remember what to do to fix the problem.
