I have Wilson's remixed/remastered Thick as a Brick, and although it's one of my least-favorite Tull albums I was impressed by how he'd subtly improved it. So I immediately went looking for the 2011 Aqualung remix, only to have Amazon tell me it's "not available". Apparently, it's been pulled because Wilson didn't like the way it was mastered, so he's doing it over.
He recently started a small firestorm when he posted on the Gearslutz mastering forum to basically imply that mastering is a scam. Needless to say, that went over like the proverbial lead balloon with that crowd, but it piqued my curiosity and led to me discovering what has since become one of my favorite reference recordings, Hand.Cannot.Erase. It's an excellent case-study in the art of mixing and mastering.
Wilson's shaking things up by essentially
not mastering this stuff in the traditional sense. MEs are fond of saying that a good-enough mix requires no mastering, and Wilson seems to be proving that point. I can only hope this is the tip of the spear for a broader movement to return to dynamic recordings.
Anyone know if he remixed In the Court of the Crimson King? And, if so, where can I buy it?
[UPDATE]
OK, I found a complete list of his remixes on his
Wikipedia page. And yes, he did do Crimson King in 2009. But I'm still hunting for a place to buy a copy.
