I’m on Windows 7 just now running Sonar Platinum. Should I update my operating system to Widows 10 before the servers go down? Any advice welcome …

Many thanks in advance.

no windows 10 sux.......if everythings working well with your computer and your software....don't upgrade, because the cakewalk servers could go down any day, you should dis-enable all windows updates, because updates can cause problems with your software

IMHO it depends........Are you a hobbyist or a do you make a living with Sonar.

The reason I ask this:
I am in a home studio, just me. I am retired IT guy like so many here. I write, record and have a great time. Play out now and then
I am on win 8.1x64 and have been since it came out.
I have zero issues with Sonar or any other apps I have and I have a ton.
Sound forge Pro 11 and Sonar Plat are the main ones. But I have ton of third party plugs and apps.
NO issues so why would I upgrade? I would have to be crazy. I had win 10 installed for about a mointh. I did not like it. JUs my 2 cents. So it soes not benefit me to open that can of worms.

But, If i made my living running a studio I might think differently.
So I am sure some of those guy will chime in. And others like me also.

I would strongly advice no...

The most scary thing for Sonarians is Sonar will stop working because of Win10 function updates. Some of us are freezing setup or at least considering doing it to ensure it will not happen.

If you plan to work in Sonar the best option is to stay on Win7 as updates there are rare and fix type so probability to break is lowest on online system.

I regret very much my decision to migrate my PCs to Win10. No benefits of it but many problems. On Win7 I had completely no problems. On Win10 I was forced after many frustrating hours of fixing, reinstallation from scratch on one of them etc to restrict update possibility.

OS in fact is only to provide platform for application you use. Just by itself it doesn't matter. Is any person in the world who is using just pure OS on his/her computer?

I replied to this, with a lot of helpful information, but it seems to have been deleted or vanished.

Good luck!

If you want to keep your DAW and OS in isolation, or simply turn off Windows updates, it's totally your choice.
If you run or install other (and older) software on your system. then you may have to re-consider eventually, when Windows programming has moved ahead and left old software behind . . . or when the install / update routine no longer works.

If you're tech savvy, there is a way to turn of Windows 10 updates . . . if not, I would advise staying with Windows 7.

I updated my system to Windows 10 because I read there were some new audio advantages, to be honest, I never noticed any difference . . . Windows 10 is like Windows 7 shaken and stirred.

Unfortunately, my older software collection . . . one by one has stopped working properly in Windows 10 . . . with each new update I test things out to see if I need to retrograde a Windows update because something doesn't work.
It's no way to run a DAW system . . . but I have to keep other software current like Adobe, AutoCAD, MS Word etc.

If you decide against Win 10 (And there are some valid reasons to do so, depending on your situation)... Rather than stick with Win 7, I would update to Windows 8.1, which is more stable and much better optimized.  Go on Ebay and look for a vendor selling OEM licenses of Win 8.1 Pro.  (I paid $12 about a month ago, and there didn't seem to be a shortage of licenses for sale).

There's nothing physical to deliver -- you're only getting the product key.  You will need to download the Win 8.1 installer from Microsoft.  (There are lots of online step by step videos and articles on the whole procedure).

I can attest to that....Runs like a dream. And I actually have control of what happens (well for the most part.
Services I do not need or want are off. Stuff like that. Updates....only when I want them, if I want them. I have never, ever had a virus or any other crap. I am careful, but it is an internet desktop.

Windows 10 has a real bad problem right now with class compliant drivers and midi devices not working.... I have been working long and hard to fix the problem, trying nearly every fix I could find on the net, with no results.... I am going back to Windows 7 after I finish the album Im working on.... to my ears, it does sound somewhat better, but its not worth it compared to the cost of the time I have lost.

when I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10, all my picture files were taken out of the folders I had them in and windows 10 just scattered them all over the place......and the Cortina(Talking thinking computer assistant crap), Yeah from day one windows 10 annoyed me........I really would strongly advise not upgrading to windows 10, ive heard a heap of people praise windows 8.1........its got me thinkin I might do that also.
