Ok so I have been researching both and there as great features about both.  I have the Motu Ultralite3 it is great and what I have used for all my recordings so that makes me want to be loyal to Motu Pre8, downside of the Pre8 just two outputs so it is mainly an in the studio device but I like the -20db feature and I have not heard of anyone complaining about the pre amps. Octa Capture has outputs that can be used in a live gig, I like the fact that it will optimize the best levels for what ever you are playing automatically, I like that it has 4 different mixes but the downsize other than reviews I have no idea of if the quality of recording is better than my Ultralite.  I believe because the Pre8 is my Motu I will get the same quality or better. I looked into the Octa Studio and that is out of my budget really and there are not many reviews out there that I found of regular people using the Octa Studio to get a feel for it, but the number of inputs verses outputs is all you need. I need to make a decision but I need to focus on key points just not sure what they should be.   At the end of the day I don't want to have a lower recording quality than my Ultralite and advice for me at this point?

I wouldn't think the quality of Roland's Studio Capture an issue... but I suppose auditioning it at a store along side the Motu would be the thing to do.

I see the Studio Capture competing directly against the Motu 896HD Hybrid. The Studio Capture has 12 pre's, the 896 has 8. The 896 more IO, as it can accept an additional 16 channels via adat, and it can interface to the computer via USB or Firewire.

Studio Capture 12 pre's - 16x10 USB
FX - bussed reverb for monitoring

Motu 896HD 8 pre's - 28x16 mix USB/Firewire
FX - bussed reverb for monitoring
       Compressor       (in chan,out chans)
LA style leveler  (in chan, out chans)
       EQ                     (in chan,out chans)

Price is about the same for the Roland and the Motu.

The skinny?

Roland - 4 more pre's
Motu    - better mixer for live use (compression for drum kit, etc..), is expandable via adat (adat channels can be mixed within CUE mix..)

You've still got 6 balanced I/O in the MKIII, you could find pre's with output and plug into that...

Thanks for everyone's input but I have chosen to go for the Octa Capture, it works for my budget and it has automatic level setting which will save me a lot times when playing the drums, if gives you more bells and whistles for your dollar.  I do feel like I am turning my back on Motu but overall OC is a great buy for recording drums, if I had more money I would shot for the Studio Capture now on to learning what is the best mic setup for drums

The Roland has a compressor on each input.

The Studio Captures have 12 low impedance phantom powered inputs plus an additional 4 trs inputs to make a total of 16 ins and 10 outs.

I see you have it also so a question for you when using the auto-sense when I tested with it, it never stopped on it's own is that how it is suppose to work that you have to stop it or you just play a while and manually stop it?

You have to stop it. I don't know why they did not make it like a 10 second thing and then shut off automatically.

Thanks I was wondering that do you trust the settings of the auto-sense?  I made my snare drum mic a little lower than I  liked I was using an Audix I5 but over all good unit so far.  Is there anything I need to be aware of that you can think of?
