  • Clip Envelopes...There Must Be A Better Way.

When choosing to create a track 'gain envelope' a line appears in the track, from beginning to end, to which we may add nodes so we can draw our automation curves, right?  Well, if I create a clip within a track- by splitting in two places to define that clip- and choose to create a clip 'gain envelope within that selected clip, there is still a line drawn through the entire length of the track.  How do I create a gain envelope just for the clip so it doesn't affect the entire track?

I know many conventions have changed since X1 and X2 and I'm still struggling somewhat with the transition because of it.  Surely there's a no-brainer, easy way to edit gain envelopes within discrete areas of a track...or a clip... but I've been doing it the hard way; create a gain envelope, do the editing within clips...and then; one by one go in and delete all of the original 'line' that shouldn't have been created in the first place.
I'd appreciate someone's thoughtful tips that would help me make the leap out of my clueless state.  This is really torturing my work flow.  Thanks.

I think this was answered in your other thread, but if you Ctrl+Drag vertically downward from near the top of a clip's waveform it will generate a gain envelope for that clip, along with all the other clips on that track, vs. an actual track envelope (which draws across empty space).

If you are in fact already creating a clip envelope and are just concerned that all of the other clips also have them, no need to - they default to 0 dB gain so would have no effect unless you modify them.   IOW, they're harmless, and more of a convenience should you need to make additional clip gain changes.

Exactly right Steve.

If you don't want them, ignore them, they do no harm.

Thanks, Steve, I'll try that.  Regarding my other post that you mentioned, I thought it had actually failed to post or got lost in the ether at the time but now I realize it was probably just some delay on my end. Thanks for the heads up and your help with the problem.

No problem!  Glad to help.

There are other ways to add a clip envelope, such as the Edit Filter, but I prefer the Ctrl+Drag method myself.   Same for editing an existing envelope - you can again use the Edit Filter, but I prefer to Shift+Click on the envelope to activate it and then Shift+Click on the clip when I'm done.   But I'm a definite mouse + key combo user.

I'm going to try that technique myself...
