What is the correct way to move my project and audio files to a new computer? I also want to put them on my second drive. I am using a Passport external  which has my backup from my old Vista machine running X1e. Using Windows explorer, I drag and drop my project files from the Passport to my new Machine running X2a. My question is can I drag and drop my files to the 2nd hard drive on the new machine?  I know I need to change something in Sonar, but what?  I truly need help. I have read and read till I am crossed eyed. That is one way to have dual monitors. Ha Ha !
Thanks a bunch.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to do, from your post.

There is nothing magical about Sonar project folders.  If you are using per-project audio folders, then you can move any Sonar project folder around to your heart's content, in terms of having backups.

If you are seeking to move the default location where Sonar STORES/ACCESSES project folders, then you go into Edit>Preferences>File>Folder Locations, and point to the folder location you want to use for the default project folder location for Sonar.

But, if you are just wanting to make a copy of a folder, you can just copy and paste it wherever you like.

I hope that helps - please explain if I completely missed the mark on what you are needing assistance with.

First, Thanks Bob for responding. You have the correct idea of my plan. I just want to move my old project from the old to the new machines 2nd drive. I see where I can browse and make the change in the project folder location. What about in the Global Audio Data folder.
I just want to do it right. I love Sonar and my disability gives me more time to learn. Once again, Bob, many Thanks.

The Global Audio Data folder is set in Preferences > File > Audio Data although there should not be much in there if you use per-project folders.

You need to reinstall Sonar and I would put it in the default folders on the c: drive unless you want to have problems.

Can I drag and drop from my Passport to the 2nd HDD? The audio and project.cwp files will be the only thing on the 2nd HDD. I called and spoke to Cakewalk help desk and was told that it wouldn't make much difference in performance of my new machine. I have read way too much on this forum to know better than believe that. So, that is why I am asking before I jump. Measure twice or three times, cut once.

Thanks Dave for your response. It sounds like you speak from experience about having problems. Are you saying do not move my project files from the default folders at all. Or only during a reinstall of Sonar?

Yes, drag and drop the project and audio folders will work. Just make sure folder locations are defined correctly in SONAR so it knows where to look for things.

I have not had any issues with not having projects or the default audio folders on the C: drive but I here is how I set it all up.  The Project Folder and Default Audio Folders are the same in my setup (in my case "E:\Cakewalk Projects"). I always user per-project foldes and always have the "Store project audio in its own folder" checked. Since the audio is stored in each project, the "Default Audio Folder" is only a temporary storage location. Because SONAR really wants a "C:\Cakewalk Projects" directory, I create a junction with the DOS command mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Projects" "E:\Cakewalk Projects" where "E:\Cakewalk Projects" is the actual path to your Default Audio Folder.

You made the DOS changes thru the command prompt using mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Projects" "E:\Cakewalk Projects.
Is that part really safe to do?       Just wondering?

I have never had a problem using mklink at the cmd prompt.
