Scook, where is your computer and hardware info?

You can't just move program folders in Windows. The registry has to be changed and that is not something that can be done easily or at all. If you want to move your projects, that's ok. You'll have to tell Sonar where you moved them to when you load the project. Relocating the program is another story.

You are the first to ask for it. I cannot recall ever posting a question that required that information. If it helps:
X2a Producer
Win7 Home Premium 64bit SP1
i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz
12GB RAM
2-2GB HD
1-128 SSD

Scook, I meant no harm in asking what kind of computer you have. Sorry about that. I try to learn from everyone.

Install the software for Sonar on the C drive in the new machine and let it use all the defaults.

Then simply copy the folders and song files off the external drive into the second HDD on the new machine.

waa laa... you're done.

When you work on NEW songs, let Sonar store them in the default Cakewalk Projects folder in the C drive. When you finish the song, simply do a CUT on the new folder and PASTE it to the folder in the second HDD.

Should you ever need to revisit a song in that second HDD, simple click OPEN in Sonar and navigate to the disk where the song is located.

I use this very method and use an external as a quick back up. It is possible to open the older folders from the second HDD as well as from the external USB drive.

No Worries...

Well, there are usually multiple ways to accomplish something.

The install of X2 creates a default projects folder at: C:\\Cakewalk Projects.  During my X2 install, I specified D:\\Cakewalk Content, rather than use the default on the C: drive of the same name.

Immediately upon completing my install, I created a folder on a different hard drive: D:\\Cakewalk Projects, and can't recall if I created a sub-folder for Audio Library or if I was able to point to it in the install, but either way that's where I set the global audio folder to be.  I use per-project audio sub-folders within each project folder anyways, so the only time that pops up is when I am exporting audio.

Anyways, I made sure the folders were all specified as I wanted them to be in Preferences, and that was the end of that.

My old projects were all simply pasted into the D:\\Cakewalk Projects folder, and with the audio folders all contained within each project, that was the end of it.

I never went back and deleted the empty C:\\Cakewalk Projects folder - don't know if it matters - it never mattered to me.

I also never went through the mechanics of any linking of any libraries or anything like that.

It all just works for me, and if I ever choose a different scheme, then I only need to set things up however I want, and then will change whatever I need to in Preferences to tell Sonar where anything has moved to.

It's really pretty trivial to do, and you can change it whenever you want.  For me I did it for performance reasons, as I have plenty of space on all of my hard drives.

Hope that helps,

Can I drag and drop from my Passport to the 2nd HDD? The audio and project.cwp files will be the only thing on the 2nd HDD. I called and spoke to Cakewalk help desk and was told that it wouldn't make much difference in performance of my new machine. I have read way too much on this forum to know better than believe that. So, that is why I am asking before I jump. Measure twice or three times, cut once.

If I were you, I wouldn't CUT & Paste, I'd COPY & Paste, for 2 reasons:

  1. You eliminate any possibility of a project becoming corrupted during cut/paste due to power issues
  2. You end up with a backup copy of all your projects

Don't worry about it, no harm done. I hope you get the new machine going to your satisfaction. It is not that difficult. Install SONAR on the C: drive with the OS and put your projects and audio data folders where ever you want. Copy your old projects and audio data and move on. Running your projects off a second internal drive is a good idea. As is using per-project folders with audio stored in the project folder.

Dang it - you scared me.  I thought I had said to 'cut' earlier.  I also do copy/paste followed by an explicit delete, rather than cut/paste, for those very reasons.

Stop scaring me! :)
