Hello.  I recently upgraded from sonar 8.5 to Sonar X2.  The program has changed somewhat, so I am trying to learn the newer software.

In Sonar X2 Producer, how do I find the location (the path) of a given audio clip or file?  In previous versions of Cakewalk, I could simply right-click on an audio clip, and a drop-down list would appear.  Clicking on the Clip Properties in the drop-down list would show me a page that included the clip name, and other relevant clip information, including the location and path of the associated audio file.

This has changed in Sonar X2.  Right-clicking on a clip shows a drop-down list, but Clip Properties is not one of the options.  Using the Inspector Pane (assigned to clips) gives me information such as clip name, but not the location of the audio file.

Can anyone tell me how to find the location and path of audio files in Sonar X2?  thank you.

The default location for projects is defined in Preferences > File > Folder Locations. If you create projects in the defined folder location, use per-project folders and make sure that the "Store Project Audio in its own Folder" is selected in the "New Project File" dialog, the clips will be located in a directory directly underneath the project directory in an "Audio" folder.

There is also a dialog Project > Audio Files... that lists all the audio files in a project.

Hello.  Thanks for the info.  This is helpful indeed.

I have a folder into which Sonar is instructed to store audio files.  I generally do not store project audio in a unique folder until I am ready to archive the project.  I may need to change my methods and make unique audio folders for each project earlier.

So, is there anyway to get Sonar to tell me the file name and location of any given clip in the Tracks view?

Aside from the detail information (which includes the fully qualified clip names) in the Project > Audio Files.. dialog each clip has a unique name shown in the clip header and clip tab in the Inspector. That clip is stored by the clip name in either in the Global Audio Folder path defined in Preferences > File > Audio Data  or, if per-project folders are used with the "Store Project Audio in its own Folder" enabled, the Audio folder in the per-project folder directory.

So how you do the routine backups after each recording session? You do backups, don’t you?

Right-click the clip and choose Associate Audio Files (or press Shift+K). In the dialog, you'll see the file name, location, and bit depth.
