Hi

I was watching a youtube "CakeTV Live" thing presented by Brandon Ryan and Seth Perlstein.  They were discussing lots of various aspects of Sonar X2, covering ProChannel, views, the menu options, screen layouts, key to press to bring up certain controllers, (something about to memorize DMPC quick strokes I think it was), etc,..  They went through recording their example tune using loops and stuff, adding their own synth stuff etc,..  A really good video which provides a good sense of how to use the tools of sonar...

Anyway, the "Take Lanes" really got my cockles rocking, (my primary interest is recording guitar audio and I can at time be sloppy) they quickly went though recording some Guitar flick in the song, then selected a section they weren't too happy with and were to go over again using loop range and then clicked on the take lanes in the track.  They started playing over one of the take lanes and each time it looped through, a new take lane for that track was being added whilst the previous was saved.  They also had some setting where the original piece was ghosted and had to set some option to see it from the preferences...

I've tried to find the video again to go over that portion of it but can't seem to find it anymore - damn should have booked marked it...

I know they were using Sonar x2 pre-release Producer version...

I want to know how they set that all up, in particular the take lanes to automatically create new takes while previous takes are saved as they go over each instantiation of a take lane...

or better still does anyone know the video I'm talking about?

The video is here

The settings are in Preferences > Project > Record
Record Mode = Sound on Sound
Loop Recording = Store Takes in a Single Track
"Create New Lanes on Overlap" enabled

Since these are per-project settings, change the normal.cwt to make them the default for new projects.

You might want to start posting in the X1/X2 forum above with X series specific questions. That forum is a lot more active.

ahhh yes that's the one! thanks scook.  Your a legend!

If anyone else is interested the discussion about the take lanes comes up at about 1 hour and 5 minutes into the video...

With posting in the other forum, I just don't feel I know enough of the lingo and stuff, but yes I will very soon be posting more there...

Cheers

Hi scook,

I don't get it ??? - I followed the steps as per the video in setting up a "auto punch in/out" and a loop then making sure in preferences setup as in the video.  Now as I play along the loop the punch in/out records the selected area and then goes over the loop again and I play over and do the same and punch in/out records in that section.

Now the thing is when I stop recording, I see only the 1 take, I then need to click the little take thing in the track and expand the take again and I see the rest of the takes.  Seems like a bug to me, not sure - anyway what I don't get is now, I have 4 takes and clearly see activity in each of them) T1 will play the track however when it plays over where I selected to punch in/out it is muted, now if I now click the "S" in take T2 the whole track is muted, the same with T3.  However on my last take T4, if I solo that the track is muted but when the punch in/out selection is played it is not muted.

Does Sonar X2a Studio behave differently to how Producer behaves with regards to Take lanes?  I'm sure I have things setup just the way thy are n the video.. I've paused it many times in the preferences and listened to what they've done and it seems like my version doesn't behave as it does in this video???

Any ideas why this could be occurring?

It all sounds right to me. I do not bother with setting punch points when working with lanes. It seems redundant. I just loop record until satisfied, then comp the takes.

Like I said earlier, you are going to get more and better opinions about various workflows in the main X1/X2 forum but the choice is yours.

One other thing, all the clips between the punch points are muted (the red not sign in the upper left of the clips). If you want to hear them you will have to unmute the track AND unmute the clips.

hmm, scook, doesn't appear anyway that I can unmute these takes between the punch points...

I'll try as you suggested to post in the other thread forum...

Thanks anyway, you've been great help!

Right-click on the clip and unmute or select the clips and hit "K"

Just one more thing, the clips are muted by default because you checked the "Mute Previous Takes" option. The procedures outlined in the post above will unmute the clips.
