My vox often sounds a bit like I'm singing thru my cupped hands or a megaphone. (SM7B)
What EQ would you focus on?

Hi Glenn,
to me it sounds more that you are handling the mic in a wrong way in your recording session.
Imo an eq can not make a better track out of it, because the basic signal is "bad"
It´s hard to guess what reason it might have, but if not done, try to move
the angle and the distance of your mic. The cardioid caracteristic of that mic give several possibilities- sure you know!

On the other hand,if you are treating the sm7b right aso, this  sort of mic seems to be the  wrong  choice for you,
then I would recommend to try a condenser mic.

Have fun

Do a test where you sing at 4 or 5 different distances. listen back and see which is best. after that, be sure to stay consistent. you can use a wind screen to help you be consistent by putting it at the desired distance and then staying very close to it while singing.
last suggestion, try using a Multiband compressor as your eq. this will give dynamic eq that is tailored to the frequencies that are problematic in you high, mid, and low range. be sure to adjust the ratio and threshold for each band individually. message me if you need
more clarification.

Hi M_Glenn_M,
It's likely going to be pretty tough for folks to make good recommendations sight unseen (so to speak....hearing unheard maybe? anyway...), but very generally the megaphone effect centers around 1K. If you could give us a link to hear your voice you'd probably get better suggestions.

Standing close to any mic increases bass response. If you have problems with wind bursts causing p-b pops, move the mic to a side position to your mouth while keeping the same distance. Sometimes the pop filters or wind screens can't keep those pops out. I would follow the advice already here. But look closely at the distance you are from the mic. Also check and see if you are using the same channel for in and out in your DAW and if that channel shares the computer audio output. Sometimes you will get some phase issues if your interface is set that way.

Thanks guys.
The mic seems great for me in most cases and I do have a wind screen so that's what makes me think it's an adjustable setting.
I might have adjusted the COSM input setting on my BR800 controller on these few that sound this way.
I'm auditing 20 songs to see how they go together and this sound shows up in contrast to the others.
I'd love to learn more about Multiband Compressors for this track and others as they are used so much in mastering and will message you James.
I'll also post a link as to the difference as an example once I upload them to Soundclick
Thanks again
Glenn

The SM7b isn't going to capture much room sound... so the track will be "dry" sounding.
Do you have the bass roll-off engaged on the SM7b?
The SM7b has significant proximity effect when you move in close.
Assuming it's in good working order... and you're not rolling off the bottom end (high-pass filter engaged), the mic should capture plenty of low end.

What mic preamp are you using?
Does the preamp offer impedance switches?

I do have both the bass rolloff and the HF boost engaged.
I'm using the BR800 as the preamp and I have now settled on a patch that has Low cut set at 20Hz, a comp/Lim set to Rack160, threshold 74 ratio 4:1, attack and release at 40, and a noise suppressor with threshold at 80, release 16.
Having said all that..there is no guarantee I used this setting on these "problem" songs.
