Oh wow, that sounds like it might work.  That said, my eventual solution (not just for this reason) was a new laptop which of course solved that problem.  Just meant I couldn't use Sonar on my laptop for about 1.5yrs unless I dragged a USB audio device along.  :/  Thanks for writing this up.  :)
