Hey folks. Had a weird thing happen with my midi data, it started vanishing. I already had my basic drums programmed using piano roll (session drummer 3). Was watching some Sonar U vids, decided I really liked the SS over the PRV for drums, so I started converting my PRV midi tracks to SS. This worked for the first couple of clips, but all of a sudden the midi notes started disappearing when converted to SS. I had to "undo" to get the data back.
Being new to X2, I suspected that I did something to cause this. A forum search on the topic didn't help me. Does anyone know what I may have done to cause this?

If you have a drum map involved, Step Sequencer flips out when opening clips, but does so in weirdly inconsistent fashion.

I just spent the entire day in step sequencer, and had no out of the ordinary issues with it.  (just the usual stuff)

Just a thought,

I'm not totally sure what a drum map is, but thanks for the info, I'll research this.

A drum map displays easy to read names for each drum in a kit, acting as a translator, so you see Kick Drum instead of a note name/number.

Step Sequencer 2 is NOT friendly to drum maps, and this is exposed during editing, when the clips were created with the midi track pointing to a drum map.

Just wondering if you had one specified anywhere.  (When you open step sequencer, do you see note names and numbers, or do you see drum names?)

When I open step sequencer, I see drum names. In PRV, I see both drum names and numbers/note names.

I have noticed that the only midi clips that are disappearing are the ones that have vertical lines in the track view. I assume this is velocity/CC data? Is there some way to remove this?

You can view all MIDI data in the Event List and delete the ones you don't need.

I have seen something similar happen, but only 1 time in 8.5. I had been editing a piano track and the notes just  totally disappeared. I was not able to recover them through undo. Specifically, I was watching the track play and as each note played, it disappeared. That went on for about 4 bars and I stopped playback. I was flabbergasted. I have never seen it happen again. I have spent hundreds upon hundreds hours in Sonar and have seen it do some very strange things but that took the cake. I have no idea what caused it.

I will say this again.  Step Sequencer does NOT play well with drum maps, AND Cakewalk technical support advised me that it is NOT intended to be used with drum maps.

This is despite some of the Sonar videos, help documentation, and even the Sonar X2 Power book explaining how drum maps can be used with Step Sequencer.  Yes, clips can be created with them, BUT, once editing is attempted, sometimes things work, and sometimes they don't, and the nature of weirdness changes all the while.

I had LOADS of problems when trying to open clips for editing, when the clips were created in Step Sequencer with a drum map assigned to the midi track.

Weird things began happening in an inconsistent fashion, and the final word on it from Cakewalk technical support is to NOT use drum maps with Step Sequencer.  Sometimes notes would not display.  Sometimes the wrong clip would open, meaning I would double-click on one clip, but a vastly different one would open up.  Things like that, and more.

The workaround for ME, as I had already created all of these clips, was to bounce them all to a midi track, which breaks the association between those clips and Step Sequencer.  Then everything was OK.

The lesson for ME there was to avoid creating future clips in Step Sequencer using drum maps.  This was after lots and lots of frustration and trying lots of different things, only to come back to that being the reality.

So now, I keep a cheat sheet I built in Word, with a document containing a table of Kit Piece Names, Note Names, and Note Numbers, that I now use to enter drum events in Step Sequencer.  It works, and until they change the current functionality of Step Sequencer, that's just the way it is.
