That's cool to know Mesh. I'm really trying to go minimal on my set up, I'm down to 7 synths, and the only 2 sample based are for XLN, but Sample Modelling Brass is mmy next purchase, which will draw me into the world of Kontact.

And it's a whole new world right there...

When I got my EMU6400 Ultra in the late 90's I stopped making music, I was stiffeled by it, I gotto know it really well, but never finished anything. Kind of been an on going story since. When I had 2 bass stations, a Fab383, Quadrasynth, and drumstations, and a range of fx, I was really creative.

Recently I've stripped down to 7 synths. My next will be Kontact Player for Sample Modelling Brass, and the fact that you have limitations on that suits me to the ground.

I just checked and Brio need full Kontact, so as cool as it looks, I think I'll stick to my other plan. Having bought a triangle recently, I think I'll just buy some shakers, cabasas and add the human feel the human way.

I've 5 credits with XLN for Kitpeices and have little interest in any of the ten available
Brio does look cool though. Just have to get back to nagging XLN.

My favorite percussion library has been Jamstix's Percussion Pack, which contains a pretty extensive collection and alternate choices for mainstays such as tambourines and shakers. But since you don't want to add another VI, TTS-1 does have acceptable triangle, wood block, cowbell, and tambourine samples.

I would urge you, however, to re-think your opposition to Kontakt. As stevec notes, it opens up a whole 'nother world of possibilities. Yes, it can present so many possibilities that it becomes a barrier to creativity, but you can control that by limiting the number of libraries you add. At least, I think that's true. In theory, anyway.

As I'd need to get Kontact Player for Sample Modelling Brass, it comes with a free library. I think I'd be pretty stupid to fork out 400 euros without testing Kontact player first. That may be the start of my slippery slope. Brass is my priority and for a longtime been the end of my GAS, and I just won't be able to afford Kontact for the foreseeable future, by that I mean throughout 2017. I've got pretty much all the sounds I want, it's literally just simple percussion I want. I can probably find that in Rapture Pro, or just buy the actual percussion instruments themselves and play for real.

Plus I can take real percussion into the classroom

Yup, the free player is the gateway drug. But you'll quickly discover that compatible libraries are expensive, typically $200-400 and up.

With the full product you get access to hundreds of cheap and free libraries, plus an extensive bundled library. That includes triangles. And tubas and bass trombones and other things you probably wouldn't go out and buy a $400 library to cover. You'll easily recoup the initial investment.

Gotta add a +1 to real instruments, though. At least for shakers and tambourines. But it'd be prohibitively expensive to acquire all the exotic percussion instruments that a deep library would include. And then have to learn how to play them competently!

Reading into Sample Modelling's Brass, one criticism was that it wasn't suited to orchestral set ups, unless you were going for the Gil Evans, Miles sound.  Which funnily enough is the way I'd lean (and Jaga Jazzist more modern side). I'm not someone who has ever been interested in orchestral music really.I'd rather one good Tuba, than banks of different type. Being the WX5 is my main midi device, I'm suited to Sample modelling set up. The brass collection would fit my real sax and flutes really well.

After that I'm not really after other instruments sounds. The 400 Euros from Sample modelling gives me Tuba, French horn (which is great with flute), Bass and tenor trombone, trumpets, cornets and flugal. I've been pondering this collection for a few years now. I do like a bass clarinet, which uses their swam Engine, and seems to sounds really nice.

I'm not sure exotic instruments is what I'm after, I could pick up the African drums that are kitpeices with XLN, but they don't interest me tonally, and having their Session Percussion give me the less exotic and more common percussion as it is.
