Hey,
I apologize for asking this here but I don't have much time to make a decision.  I received an email from Cakewalk to upgrade to Sonar X2 at a great price.  The problem is that my current version is 8.  Will this work for me or do I have to start over with the X2 product?  I did research this on the Cakewalk web site but didn't find it.  Maybe I missed it, but the offer expires after tomorrow.

thanks,
Tom

If your version of SONAR 8 is Producer, you would qualify for an upgrade price of $99 (not the $49 that X1 users would get). If it is studio, your price would be $149.

Yes, I have the Producer version.  Thank you very much!

Keep in mind that X2 is not supported on XP. The quick fix was the last patch that will install on XP. The X2a patch will not install on XP.

Also keep in mind that X3 is likely around the corner. You would expect to see promotions when that comes out too. Of course going down that route is a gamble, but something to keep in mind.

Matt's right - every time a new version is announced, there's a bunch of folks who just upgraded who complain that they weren't warned; and if only they'd known they would have waited; and that they deserve to get the latest version for nothing.

The next version hasn't been announced yet, but experienced folks are saying it is coming real soon now.
So, consider yourself warned.

what do you think would be better then :
1. to upgrade from X2 Studio to X3 Producer via X2 Producer
2. or directly when its released

Historically, once the new version has been announced, there are deals that typically go "buy X2 now, get x3 for free when it's released." So that's the deal you'd be waiting for. I kinda think that's a safe option as then you get two versions, one of which may be more stable on your system than the other. But no garuntee this deal will show up.

Personally, I'd wait. But that's an easy choice because I'm too busy to make music right now (planning a wedding) and don't have the cash (paying for a wedding). It depends on how patient you are and your financial situation (ie buy X2 now then buy X3 in a few months too - which is not a compulsory purchase, of course).

congradulations on the wedding, Matt, if it is you.

Yes, they will probably come out w/ x3 soon if the past is any indicator of performance (radio joke there).  SONAR A goes on sale before B comes out.  Then if you buy reduced price B you'll get a free upgrade to and from A.  Some people here only upgrade every other time.  But Cake will usually make exceptions to keep early upgraders happy so they get the same discount as late updaters.  But be sure and ask for it.

As Matt says the easiest thing to do is wait for the Buy X3 and a free upgrade from 8.5.  That way you get the best deal w/o begging.  But if it was me I'd jump on the upgrade.  Just because the above is the way they've done business in the past doesn't mean they have to give you the same deal in the future.
