Hi all, I've just updated to X2, so a brand new download yesterday, do I need to install the updates?

The X2a update fixes more than 250 bugs, so yup, install it. But first, make sure Windows is up to current maintenance levels. X2a requires a minimum of Windows 7 at Service Pack 1 maintenance.
