Where can I get a decent trombone (or an indecent one for that matter) I thought they would be one in Dimension Pro, but no. Saxes and trumpets by the bucket load, but no trombones.

EastWest Hollywood Brass Gold is excellent.

Dim Pro includes a trombone in the Garritan Pocket Orchestra section of the Browser.

Maybe it's time to invest in Kontakt, Peter. You'll find some decent trombones in the factory library, as well as some usable trumpets and tuba. And of course lots of third-party brass and orchestral libraries, although the better ones are a bit pricey.
 
For a less-expensive (although less versatile) collection, check out the underrated Prizm from Supersynths. Based on the Wusik engine, it has a lot of interesting brass selections and it's a bargain at $75.

I have no idea what these are like, but they certainly will not be highly detailed with multiple articulations.
 
As Bit said Kontakt is the standard, I have Kirk Hunter Concert Brass 2 which I picked up for a fraction of its current price in a group buy. The trombones in that package are suburb.
 

For Symphonic there's several but great sounding for big band / jazz there's these. Not inexpensive but if you're doing to be allot of projects with tbone:

One of the Bass Trombone patches is included with Cakewalk Sound Center. In addition to the patch in the Garritan Pocket Orchestra Brass, there is a Trombone patch in the DimPro Holiday Pack from last year. The GPO patch is the only one that sound like a trombone to me though. When searching Cakewalk synths for patches, I find using the Windows search function helpful. I can search across all the synth patches in "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk" in one pass.

I use the samplemodeling trumpet, clarinet, and sax applications and will probably get the tbone set as well. I considered the EastWest Brass Gold software but was turned off when I found out it uses the iLOK security system. I can appreciate some means of protecting your software, but I'm not into the dongle scheme. It's so 70s.

It is not as good as SampleModeling but at lot better than Cakewalk’s trombones IMO. Google/bing for the best price as it can be purchased for $110-$130 USD. Be sure to get the Aria version as it is all-self contained, that is you do not need to buy anything else. Earlier versions needed Kontakt.
