How do I get CC11 to modify the CC11 envelope instead of
adding events to the track?

You can convert MIDI controllers to envelopes after they've been recorded by selecting the track and choosing Clips > Convert MIDI Controllers to Envelopes from the Track view menu.

And if you want to convert it back again (or transform any MIDI envelope to MIDI data), use a virtual MIDI cable:

Track 1 - Envelope ---> Virtual MIDI Cable Out.
Track 2 - Virtual MIDI Cable In.  Arm Recording.  Input Echo: On.
Hit the Record button.

This is especially useful for precise control, ultra-smooth curves, and MIDI LFO clips; using the Draw Tool.
Virtual MIDI Cables should have their own chapter in Sonar X3 Power!, Scott.

Thanks b rock! I'll keep that in mind, but no promises.

hey neil,

if you're talking about using a control surface or other instrument controller with x2 the easiest way is this:
click the edit filter of the midi track
select cc11 if it shows up, if not click MIDI and select 11 in the value dropdown
click the automation lanes button to show automation
on the cc11 lane, right-click the value slider at the right and select "remote control"
in the popup, under channel messages, click on controller and type 11 in the box
make sure the midi channel is set correctly
enable automation write for the envelope

this will capture cc11 data for that lane on either playback or record.

hope that's what you were looking for.

This is exactly how I used to do it in version 8.5 and earlier.  Somehow I lost my way in X2.  I thought that remote control had been dropped in many areas (force-feeding ACT).  Thanks for getting me back on track again, swamptooth.
