Thanks for all the replies, especially about the 16 bit 44.1 part.

That seems to be the problem.  With 2004XL, apparently the default  was the 16/44.1, so I never had to do anything, it just worked.  With X2 Essential, the default seems to be 32bit, so now I have to remember to change that box every time I export wav files, a step I never had to do with 2004XL.

Thanks again,

If your "Record Bit Depth" in Preference > File > Audio Data is higher than 16bit (and it should be assuming your Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings "Audio Driver Bit Depth" is higher than 16bit) make sure to set a dither option when exporting a 16bit file.

Dither?  I was feeling pretty good about just changing that one box and then Scook had to add dithering.  Thanks for the reply, Scook, but I don't know what dither option to choose.  Any suggestions?

Not sure what options Essentials has. It may not matter which one you choose. You might want to experiment a bit and find which one sounds best to you.
