Hello to everyone.  The past month has been busy for me musically.  I upgraded to Platinum, and then my sweetheart gave me a new Paul Reed Smith Tremonti SE for my birthday a couple weeks ago.  So, I felt compelled to do some work in the studio to see what I had, and just fiddling around, came up with this ditty to showcase my guitar and the new tools in Sonar.  It's less than two weeks old, so all ideas are open and welcome.  It's something of a hard rock hoedown and can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com...hi&songID=13078742

heavy metal hoedown!!
LOL,
yes, it is.
cool tones,
interesting riff with the harmonization...
the bass/low end is a bit muddy,
and it could use a more aggressive kick pulse,
i think that would tie all the cool textured stuff together..
the snare rim riff going on makes sense,
from a 'hoedown' perspective,
but honestly, it get repetitive too fast,
and if you broke it up with a regular jamming drum part,
and only used the rim shot thing for just certain sections,
and keep it short,
it will be way more interesting...
cool tune.
dont be afraid to get even weirder.....

Thanks, Bat, for the good ideas.  I've already changed the snare in the verses and just kept the sidestick on the breaks.  I cleaned up the bass gtr. a bit, but I didn't touch the bass drum.  Good ear and good call.

I would agree the kick definitely needs some more presence, good basis to work from I am sure you will bring this into shape.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, love the description "heavy metal hoedown". Although I'd classify it as "hard rock" rather than "metal", but any suitably original piece is gonna defy classification. This reminds me of something ZZ Top might produce, delightfully genre-agnostic.

Forgive the cliche, but I think it needs a cowbell - behind the cool descending guitar hook.

Interesting style/fusion of Hard Rock, guitars are the main drive for that hoedown feel.

Great performances, nicely arranged. Mix sounds fine, bass sounds good. Superbly done

Minor criticism: I think a good solid/deep sounding 'Stomp' added to the kick i.e accents (first beat) for the verses, and constant 4/4 flow for the chorus would suit this song/style. This will also balance out the bottom end. Therefore, not so much a mix/balance issue.  The guitar on its own in the intro falls a bit flat (lack-luster) due to the resonance of one note in that particular inversion -- it needs a counter balance to 'strengthen the melody' such as for example, one note sustained by another instrument, maybe use it as a quick build up till the drums kick in.

Thanks for your responses.

Wookie, I kicked up the kick drum on this pass.  I can always count on you to hear the bass.

Dave, the cowbell's coming, and hard rock fits better!

Greg, you make a good point.  Give me a few days to deal with this, and we'll see what happens.

Daryl, coming from a master, your words are very encouraging.
