Cool touches on the vocals and harmonies. The guitars are cool, and I think it really came together after about the 1:00 mark, almost like you got more sure of it as you went. I'll second (third?) that the kick really could use more bottom. Nice one Lynn!

Dan

Very cool track. Love the guitars. The bass sounds a little, i don't know... I saw someone up above said muddy... that might be the right word... Just kinda too much... But I saw you said you cleaned it up in a future update? Otherwise I really like this and the overall mix sounds really great. Fun track.

Dan, thanks for weighing in.  I appreciate the comment about the vocals because they were something of a challenge.  I just spent about two hours on the the bass guitar and drum, and I'm afraid if I apply much more bass I'll get a DUI ;)

Dave, thanks for your comments, they're very encouraging.  As noted above, I spent some time on this, but my ears are tired and I could use additional input.

Thanks to all of your for your time.

Hey Lynn, one thing I've learned is you can't have a big bass and a big kick at the same time, unless that's all you have going on. I think you might want to EQ the bass to move it up the frequency scale a bit then the kick can sit better.

Dan

Hi Lynn,

My first thought was "vocals up please" . . . this is definitely a fun tune, and original as all get out. Genre-bending. I would echo a few of the above comments, I would say ZZ-Top meets Rush. Kind of a prog rock hoe-down.

I absolutely support the more cowbell. It cries for cowbell! Have fun with it!

Also, good supporting background vocals, production touches (were you gargling at one point?!!) they add a lot.

your "chorus" with those three downward-moving chords is kind of nuts, and I like nutty choruses. Well chosen!

The guitar work is great but I thought the sound itself came through just a tad thin, I wonder if it's your amp modelling, what are you using, is there more beef somewheres? Or panning them wider? I dunno.

This is one of those songs that I will remember hearing, it just kind of works and sticks with you.

cheers,
-Tom

Dan, thanks again for your input.  I'll give your suggestion a try now that my ears are a bit fresher.  I wasn't thinking about the war between the bass gtr and bass drum, but now I'll redirect my focus.

Tom, thank you for the kind words.  The guitars were recorded with Guitar Rig 5 which means I can change the sounds until I get it right.  The gargling effect was raising the modulation mix on the extended notes that I sang, over a period of time and then backing off, vie automation.  And, more cowbell coming up.

Well, here I am again.  I worked several hours just sculpting the bass, cowbell, and vocal response per your suggestions.  This song has come a long way from the simple guitar demo that I recorded, thanks to all your help.  Here it is freshly updated: http://www.soundclick.com...hi&songID=13078742

Lynn, Sounds like a fun song for your new Platinum version and Paul Reed Smith guitar. Nice sounds going on and very nicely executed.

Peace and Blessings, John

Lynn!!!  Really cool tune my friend!  Congrats on the new guitar (and a GF who will buy one for ya!!!)
Guitar tones sound fine to me.  Kick drum sounds alright too.  The drum beat still leaves me wanting something.  The kick doesn't "drive" in the verses...I think a 4-on-the-floor beat would serve you better than the accented One.  I also think the cowbell should be panned off the top of your vocal and moved to the right.  Can you bring your vocal up and maybe add just a tad of "air" to them?  (Hi EQ).   I had a little trouble understanding the words.

What are you using for bass? It's not "too much", but the tone of it is "rude". (to me)   Be sure it and the kick are not competing for the same frequency.  Or maybe it's just the drone-y notes of the verse that make it sound that way.  (It sounds different when you played more notes in the breaks.)  Maybe a bit more percussive attack?  I don't know.

I love how the guitars sort of come together around 1:02 or so!

Sounds like you had a fun time making this one, and I just love quirky, creative stuff.  This one fits the bill!
