  • Real Question - Sonar and AD2 GM Mapping

Hi All,

Trying to get Sonar Pro (WIN7/64bit) and AD2 (Addictive Drums2) to correctly play a GM (General MIDI) drum sequence created by Band in a Box (BIAB).

I know how to get to and set AD2's GM Mapping option in the Map Window.  But when I select it - it displays an incomplete/partial GM drum mapping.  For example the AD2 GM drum map has no patches/drum sounds assigned to keys 60 through 89.  The BIAB GM mapping has patches/drum sounds assigned all the way from key 35 through 82.  Those higher patches are what I need as I do a lot of jazz/samba/latin stuff - and that's where drum sounds such as bongos (60, 61) and congas (62, 63), timbales (65, 66) etc. are found in the BIAB GM drum map.

I know you're all going to respond - "you have to map the AD2 patches to the BIAB patches..."

but...

I tried that.  AD 2 only has slots for 18 instruments (of which 6 are reserved for cymbals, and there are only 3 Flexi Slots).  I have the AD2 bongos, congas, and timbales kitpieces - I can assign them to one of the three Flexi Slots and then drag them to the GM mapping keyboard.  Cool, that works.

but...

There are only 4 tom slots (Tom1 through Tom 4).  If I assign one conga or bongo to the Tom1 slot, it overrides the original kit sound that was in that slot (e.g. traditional floor tom).  And then anywhere in the AD2 GM drum map that Tom1 is referenced the newly added conga/bongo sounds and I lose the sound of the original tom.

I'm wondering if I misunderstood how AD2 works.  I bought extra kitpieces hoping to create a full GM drum map - but AD2 seems limited in that there are only 18 drum slots (of which only 4 are for toms - including traditional toms and Latin percussion instruments.)

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way?  How can I tweak the AD2 GM drum map so that I can have the traditional toms in their standard GM note positions (35 - 57) and have the Latin percussion instruments in the higher GM note positions (60 - 82)?

Any suggestions on how to handle this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Danny V.

Have you considered using 2 instances of AD2?   One instance could be loaded with the lower pitch drum pieces and the other instance could be loaded with latin percussion kit pieces.  Then create a custom mappings for each instance  to correspond to the GM specs and save each instance a preset.  After creating the instrument tracks and mapping, save it all as a Track Template.

Using this method would also require duplicating the MIDI drum track to feed each AD2 instance.

I have not tested the above scenario, but it seems like it might be an alternative solution to your problem.

Hope this helps or stimulates some additional ideas,

You have to run your latin percussion on a separate track assigned to a second instance of AD2 loaded with the percussion library Adpak.

Hey everybody - thanks for the responses - you're both on the right track.  It also slowly dawned on me that the way to handle the issue was to use two different instances of AD2  - the second one mapping the Latin percussion instruments to the higher note values on the GM MIDI Keyboard map.  Then use 2 MIDI tracks to get the full playback.

I'll try it later and report back.

Thanks,

Hi everyone!

I get AD2 drum map from the sonar's manuals page in the steam, but I dont understand how to use it.
When output of the MIDI Track is set to DM1 I have drum map but no sound from AD2. AD2 does not receive midi  from this midi track in this case. When I switch output of midi track to "Addictive drums 2", AD2 works fine but without drum map. What's wrong?

Can't an internal SONAR drum map be used to route a single MIDI track to two instances of AD2?
