Hi guys,

I often work on huge live recordings - most recently a 4-hour, 44 track recording. X2 runs really well in overdubbing and editing, but no matter what I do or how long before the session I open the project, it never quite gets on top of all the wav file pictures. There are always some blank pics that say "Busy". The harddrive keeps running, so it is clearly trying to render pics.

I have set my picture cache folder to 5000-, but that has not solved it either.
 
Secondly, the moment I cut a clip, Sonar seems to have to recalculate that entire wav graphic, once-again leaving me with a "blank" picture for that clip for many many minutes.
 
Quite annoying, and embarrassing when editing with the client present.
 
Any ideas?

I remember this being a major issue in the more distant past (Pro Audio versions).
Ron/Noel made some changes over the last ~8-10 years or so... that helped most with the peak overview files.
Can you split the recording into separate songs... movements... or sets?

No, you are not alone... I am currently working on 60 tracks of a twho hour show.  Each track is about 2GB in size, and some of them simply never render the wave form in the master project.  It's not until I cut each song out of the master, and into its own project that things get sorted.  I had to back off X2 for this effort, as it is far more problematic than X1 with large projects.

P.S. No amount of deleting the picture cache or even recomputing an individual tracks picture seems to fix this.  Since I am not doing any editing in the master project, it's not a problem.  Don't know what I would do if I were editing a project this big.

Most likely, your PC, including your hard drive cannot handle this kind of processing. I suggest you freeze the tracks that are 'Busy'.

Thanks for validating the problem Poco. Unfortunately "workarounds" won't work as this is a live mix for DVD. The timeline has to stay untouched so no chopping allowed.
 
The DAW I recorded in (PT9.0) has no issues with the exact same session file..

Yeah, this is something Cake will have to address, if they want to be taken seriously by those folks doing big, professional gigs.  Although, I guess for them, it's just easier to stay with PT.
