OP,
I can kinda see your point about the Pro Channel. In part, the Pro Channel ends up being a handy tool to watch for clipping between FX. Before, when I had a ton of FX in the FX bin and one ran hot into another, I would have to listen over the moment in the song where the clip occurred to be able to fix it... and that presumes I was good enough to hear it mixed together with all the other stuff. So, the gain staging control on the FX bin is useful (both in and out).
It's handy for me as a Clip indicator. I often listen through a tune just watching the tracks expanded showing all the pro channels watching the clip lights. Frankly, I think it would be an improvement to put a green line (as opposed to red clip line) in the Wave Form Previews on busses when a channel or bus that feeds the bus with the preview has a clip caught in the Pro Channel. That would make it an easy fix. Perhaps a new light on the meter of the track or bus with the PC that clipped? -- red for traditional full on clip and yellow for clip in the PC only?
After a couple of years with the PC, I find I use the FX Chain insert more than PC FX and
I rarely use the PC FX Chain nobs for controlling various parameters on playback. I do like some of the PC FX and
it is nice to be able to re-order them all easily. I still use the old FX Bins sometimes, but mostly for the Melda M-AutoAlign plugins which don't impact the track level so I don't need to watch them for clipping.
Real-Estate:
There are times I want to be able to see more on my screen than I can. This often has to do with width. Since sometimes I am watching for clip lights on the PC (and want to see all the PCs expanded), not being able to see 16 tracks expanded with 3 or 4 busses expanded on the same 23" (58cm) screen is a drawback.
And I don't NEED to watch all the PCs going necessarily, but sometimes when I do, I notice something goofy that's causing a problem and I can fix it (because I can see it!). I like that I can control+click the PC Expander in track one to expand or collapse all PCs. That's great!
I do an awful lot of mixing from the Track View.
The Pro Channel has pulled me into the Console View and I find that this has helped me a good deal. I'm still a newbie in a lot of ways, and being able to see a little more of what I've compiled on the tracks helps me discover how to get the sounds I want.
