Funny how doctors are quick to prescribe a medication, but not once in my life has any doctor ever suggested stopping a medication. I'd still be injecting insulin after 5 years if I'd waited for my MD to tell me I didn't need it anymore. I took myself off it after 4 months, half expecting to keel over from diabetic shock, but that obviously didn't happen. I'm not even diabetic anymore.
I am worried that my doctor is going to try to put me on some sort of diabetes med. It runs strong on my maternal side. My A1C has been up in the last couple of years, near 6, over 6 then last time back down to 6. I stopped drinking Cokes, I now use a mix of a little suger, some Splenda, and some Sweet Leaf stevia for my coffee, cut back on potatoes, rice, and bread. My only worry is in the afternoon if I eat a meal (certain foods) like Chinese, or the other day I had a Baconator and about 1/2 a small order of fries, Diet Coke... about an hour or two later I literally crash. I can barely stay awake unless I eat a little sugar. I keep a tin of Atomic Fireballs by my chair, about three of them and I feel OK again. I think it is low blood sugar or something to do with insulin production or something. I've read some but I don't quite understand it. However, I know an A1C of 6.1 or 6.2 isn't that bad.
Since you've had some experience with diabetes, do you have any thoughts about this? My circulation does not seem to be as good as it used to be either. Almost every night I wake up with one or both of my hands "asleep". Especially if I awake on my back with my elbows and wrists bent. I guess it's just part of getting older. I really don't like the crashing after the afternoon meal... and a little sugar bringing me back surely means something. So many different things to think about, different ideas of what to do or not do.
Doctors and meds... yikes. A couple of years ago I was on three BP meds and my BP was still too high. They wanted to add another but the atenolol had my heartrate dropping under 50BPM. When I was younger my heart rate was always high, moderate activity would take it to 150 easily. I got them to change the atenolol to something else, Bystolic. I cut the pills and take 2.5mg a day, dropped one BP med and am now on the Bystolic and Lisinopril twice a day. My BP came down, my heart rate stays around 75BPM. I stopped the statins and my cholesterol went up a little then stabilized, sort of borderline but not "high"... then again I am not convinced that high cholesterol is bad. Doctors and pharma have been pushing a low fat diet, statins, etc for decades and heart disease is worse than ever. It isn't working.
I try to make my own medical decisions, within reason, because one size does not fit all and frankly, I don't trust them. Anyway... what do you think about the crashes and the sugar bump? What could be going on?
Thanks!
