  • Synchronising an audio import to the staff view and determining the tempo of the import

I'm using Sonar X1 and still in the learning stages. I have some old recordings, as wave and MP3,  of a small group consisting of 2 guitars and vocalists. I want to add synth drums, bass and melody line to the recordings.  However there is a slight pause at the beginning of each recording so that when I import the audio the music starts in a middle of the bar in staff view. As I want to add the melody in the staff view the notes are out of synch with the audio track. The solution would be to delete the silent introduction on the audio import so that the first beat of the recording falls on the first beat of measure 1 but I can’t work out how to do that. I’m pretty sure it won’t be difficult but I can’t find the solution in the Sonar X1 reference guide (probably because I am using the wrong keywords in the search box). I also need an easy way of determining the tempo of the imported audio so I can match the synth additions I wish to make. Can anyone help please?

I looked at your video “Creating a tempo map from live audio” and soon found out why my attempts to delete the introduction measures did not work – I had not checked “Delete hole” as I did not know what it meant. Your video soon solved my first problem.  Second problem was deducing the tempo. Looking through your videos profile I saw a revised update of the video I was studying, the revision being “ Extracting a tempo map the easy way”. Going through this I did manage to deduce the tempo of the piece I was working on. I think I’ll have to work on a few more pieces before the penny fully clicks but thank you for your help.  As I have said I’m still in the learning stage so finding your other videos is going to help me. I’ve started with your MIDI for beginners and it’s already expanded my understanding of some of the things I have been doing wrong. I’ll be looking at the others over the coming weeks and months.

I have one further question and that is “How can I identify the pitch of my imported audio recordings as they were not recoded at concert pitch.” I will though post that as a new query and resolve this posting as Answered, thank you.
