OK...

the fact that they're offering a bundled notation software with Sonar seems to say to me that they don't plan on doing much more on this in the near future... But I may be wrong...

But what's with the new layout of buttons in the window? Stacking them all the way to the left and not allowing user adjustments? Great, we can remove buttons, but what about moving the buttons to a more convenient location on the screen? To have to continually go all across the screen to change note values is horrible...

I've never needed much staff notation, but now that I've been using it a little I can see why others have compained so bitterly for years...

+1

If the staff notation was better I would not need Sebilus.

+1 as well.

I have never really used the staff notation for much other than editing.  I use Finale.  I would love to see better printed scores in Sonar.  However, I won't hold my breath because I don't think this aspect of the program is really what Sonar wants to be about.

Hi Keni-
now that I've been using it a little I can see why others have compained so bitterly for years...

And I'm one of them!, but I can also see this as a way for CW to offer an alternative until they improve their own SV. I primarily use Finale for notation, and posted a while back about a way to "integrate" the two (not perfect, but it works). I don't know much about Notion, but my ideal would still be a beefing up of SONAR's SV so at least the basics are covered. If I need something more sophisticated, I already have it in Finale.

Personally, I don't read too much into it; that since they're offering this now they won't offer that in the future. It's certainly possible, but I'll wait and see.

I'm all for better staff features.  When i need a quick printed part out of Sonar,  I end up hand writting in articulations and other info.  It sure would be nice to look at a score when creating an Orchestral or big band  piece

Since I now have Finale, and it's a VERY complex program of it's own, I'd be happy to just be able to open up Finale WITHIN Sonar, just like I'm able to open up Sound Forge for specific editing within Sonar.

You can run them side-by-side, and record MIDI from SONAR to Finale and vice-versa. Not perfect, as I said, but it works. You can look up my post on this if you're interested. I don't have the link handy.

If you happen to find the link, could you post it?  I'm curious to see posts from people who bought the Notion 3 package.

Personally, I'd love to see just the handling of triplets with embedded rests resolved - that would be just fine for me.  I'm into notation for editing and rarely do I print.  So "Staff Notation INSIDE Sonar" is what it's all about for me.

BTW - with the crazy posts on the forum over the weekend, I think I'll just lay low with the notation improvements stuff...

Well...

As I'm not much of a notation user, I am not very knowledgable in this area, but I know enuf to realize that the basics are not in place... It was real torture simply trying to insert specific note values at specific locations... Very tediuous for no reason... Why link the snap and note values? Very wasteful...

I see the reason there are not repeat signs as Sonar is linear, but enabling that for people inputing composition is necessary for many who want/need real scores output (printed)...

If they can get a 3rd party software that Sonar can read and/or output data to easily? I'm seeing right now that I will need to transfer files via smf to/from a program such as Finale... Not very elegant, but at least here I understand their' reluctance to develope it more (internal to Sonar).... But I still think it would be nice...

Or even allowing the toolbars to be moved! ;-)

I'd say you are right on the money. I wouldn't expect any improvements in Sonar notation in the foreseeable future. If you need notation, there are many other options available, but if you want it "included" in Sonar, then you need the Sonar Notation Edition. I use Finale PrintMusic.
