The  "-1" indicates the instance number..... that would mean that TTS-1 equals the first instance of the synth

If you were to add a second instance of TTS, you would see it indicated as TTS-2  and so on for the number of individual instances you have of TTS

No, the -1 is part of the synth name. The second instance will be labeled "TTS-1 2"

alas... you are correct.... so maybe the -1 is TTS software version one....and it was so good, and so perfect that they stopped at that point......?

By close observation of the original logo then, I would guess that "Twelve Tone" is a metaphorical response to the fact that the program can actually produce a full octave (12 keys) of sound.

While this may seem excessively limited, by mathematical algorithmic manipulation, all one needs to do is transpose any one of those 12 notes by a value of... 12 to get a higher or lower octave.

Afaik, the "TTS" does refer to Twelve Tone Systems, the former company name of Cakewalk.

Probably because TTS-1 has always been an OEMed Cakewalk/Sonar- bundled version of Roland's Hypercanvas GM softsynth plug-in product (replacing the earlier VSC softsynth).

Maybe Cakewalk was also planning to add their version of Edirol Orchestral to Sonar under the name of TTS-2 and there was one more Edirol soft synth (I forgot the name) so that could've been TTS-3?
I used to use Edirol Orchestral when I was on XP and still have the installation disc, but since it's not supported on Win 7 I'm not using it anymore.
