Please let me know what you think.  (I finally used AD2 drums!)
Thanks.

Nice mix! I really like the horns, guitars and drums. Those AD2 drums sound very natural here. Great job!

Mix sounds good here, well balanced, bass is present but controlled, the AD2 drums sound legit, electric guitars (lead and rhythm) cut nicely.

Two nits. 1, nothing in your song finds a rhyme for "bush" . . .  it's the title, it's the chorus, shouldn't something somewhere set it up by rhyming with it? Isn't that the law?  :)

Second, I would say your vocals are pretty excellent generally, but I thought I noticed on just a couple of your reach-up-to-the-high-notes, I thought you almost made it. This is why god made Melodyne. Pitch correction is a philosophical can of worms. I am not a good singer myself.

It could be that I am mis-hearing this, but I offer the comment in case you want to check it out. Your vocal has really good feel and energy as it is.

cool job, man.

cheers,

Nice one John, good rolling Steely Dan-esque groove. Bass line is great. Horns really make the chorus lift up and shine.

Just remembered what that bassline reminds me of..Nothing Is Easy by Jethro Tull

Really cool tune and an excellent job bringing it off.  Personally I would have liked to have heard the horn stabs just a bit louder, but that may just be a matter of preference.  Very well done!

Tom,
Thanks and good nits.  The first one, I think the law was done away with last year.  (Someone back me up on this.)
However, your second point I took back to X3 and opened up Melodyne.  I made some corrections.  I do a lot of sliding into and out of notes on this but it is not an excuse.

The back story for this song is that I originally recorded it on a Tascam 4 track cassette. The song was severely underpowered.  I took the vocals, bass, guitar off the tape and put them in Sonar.  Then I added extra stuff.  I think I got too excited about how good the song was sounding  and totally over looked the vocal.

I replace the file so it is the same link.  https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5/bird-in-the-hand
Side note.  I didn't realize SoundCloud smashes the file back to 128 kbps no matter how good the quality is on upload.  Very noticeable on this song even though I took MP3 conversion precautions.

Thanks again.

Thanks Phil.  I pushed the horn stabs up a db or two.  I uploaded the file and am using the same link.  https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5/bird-in-the-hand

Well, it's just after midnight and I couldn't sleep so I thought I'd listen to a couple songs.  After yours I'll never go to sleep.  Right up my alley and instead of laying on the couch I'm up here shakin' my thang!  Great tune, nice changes and just well played.
