  • How do I configure the settings in my Cakewalk to accept an external synth?

I am trying to set up my Yamaha SY77 synth to use within my Sonar X2 Producer. I have a M-Audio Fast Track Pro 4x4 audio interface. I would like to hook it up via Midi cables to the interface and configure it within Sonar so I can use it as a controller to play VST instruments within Sonar. I downloaded the SY77 instruments definitions file. I think now I have to get the synth listed in as a Midi Device in the Preference Menu. This is where I am confused. Could someone give me a simple "Step By Step" instruction on how to do this.  Hopefully I described my intent clearly so if this is possible, someone can explain to me how to get this set up. Thank you in advance for your help!

If the Fast track has a MIDI port then you are good to go. Once you have the cables hooked up(be sure that in goes to the out and out goes to the in) all you need do is make sure the MIDI ports are showing in Preferences MIDI device and checked. All that done be sure you have a MIDI track with either it set for the MIDI input or if playing back MIDI output.

Firewire and USB devices should automatically show up in Sonar's list of devices.

However, sometimes USB devices may not load properly so that they are not in the Devices List as they should be.

Usually I have no problems this way but when I do even a system reboot does not fix it.

I have never had a problem with USB showing up.

Thank you both for your fast response to my question. I think I was over thinking the setup. I had the Midi cables hooked up correctly and my M-Audio device was already listed. I just thought there was another step to configure my synth to Cakewalk. Anyway, it worked! Thank you both again!

If you get the INS file for the SY77 and set it up using Preferences-MIDI-Instruments, it will list the patch names when you select a patch in a MIDI track. Read the section in the Help menu called Instrument Definition tutorial.
