Just bought a new PC a few days ago to set up a DAW.  I still have a Firepod and also picked up a Focusrite 2i2 on a close out deal.  The 2i2 doesn't have midi and my new computer doesn't have a FW card for the Firepod, so I grabbed a usb-midi cable.  I'm using a Roland RD700 as my controller.
 
So, I set latency in Sonar as low as it allows (10 milliseconds) but still feel like the response is just behind my playing.  I don't think the Firepod felt this far behind, but without a FW card I can't hook it up on the new machine to test side by side.  Has anyone else had issue with latency using one of these cables?  Wondering if the firewire route would be better in the long run?  Is it indeed faster in this instance?

1.  What Driver Mode are you using in Sonar?  (ASIO/WDM)
2.  What Sample Rate is set for the audio interface?
3.  What ASIO Buffer Size is specified in the audio interface's UI?
4,  What Sample Rate is specified in Sonar?
5.  What Record Bit Depth is set in Sonar?
6.  What are the reported latency values in Sonar (for the interface as well as total round trip)
7.  For your audio interface, what is the precise driver version you have specified?
8.  Have you tried running DPC Checker and/or LatencyMon - outside of Sonar, to get system latency values?
9.  How did you get your latency set to around 10 milliseconds?
 
Please review and respond to the above, and I will try to assist

Thanks Bob!  Actually your questions pointed me in the right directions to figure this out.  Switched to ASIO, tweaked some settings, all is working great now.
