Hi all,
 
I've been reading the manual and several form posts about creating multiple takes in X2, and I still think I am doing it wrong.  Can someone walk me through it?  Ideally I'd like to create separate takes of the same track in their own separate lanes without them overwriting each other or the original track.
 
I've been trying it for the for the past few days, and I seem to be doing it wrong still b/c I'm still overwriting the original track, and each take I try does not go into its own lane.
 
 

Right-click the Record button in the Transport module of the Control Bar. In the dialog box, make sure the Create New Lanes on Overlap option is activated.

I'm pretty sure it is set up to create new lanes by default so unless you've changed something then they should be there. The old takes should be getting muted by default. This is just a guess but have you actually tried to open the take lanes? You may have a bunch of takes hidden and not realize it. To do this look for a button in the lower right portion of that track in the Track Pane (far left side of the screen with the list of all your tracks). It's hard to describe that button but it's square and has little lines on it. Click that button to open the take lanes. Unmute the individual takes to hear them.
 
If this is not the case definitely try what Scott said. Another way to set this is by going to Edit > Preferences (or press P on your keyboard) > Recording. In that section are some Take options. You can set it to overwrite on each pass, create a new take lane or create a new track. Getting familiar with the settings on that page is a good idea. Same with the most of the Preferences pages... especially in regards to Editing, Playback and Recording.
 
If it seems like your Preferences overview page is missing options click the Advanced option and it will show all of the submenus.

Do you know to click on the expand lanes button to see the lanes created?

Also, I have this set...
Preferences > Record > Recording Mode > Sound on Sound Blend (rather than overwrite).

I've been able to create one new track lane - but then as I record the new take - I watch the wav time line as it overwrites the old track and doesn't put it in a new lane.     Maybe I have one of those settings wrong...

That's normal, each new take will 'overwrite' the wave in the track, however, when you click stop, they will then each drop into their own take lane (providing you have take lanes open).
 
As mentioned above, should be set up as default. All I do is click the take lane button in the track and record. Click Stop, all takes drop into their own lane, then edit away :)

I suggest going to the cakewalk tv youtube channel and watch some of the videos that focus on recording with sonar.

Open up a test project... and loop record a 4 bar section in X2.
Record several different passes (one per each loop thru).
 
By default, the last take is the one that shows up in the track slot.
The other takes are all there (in separate lanes).
Click on the show track lanes button for the track.
Now, each take will be in a different lane.
You can mute/solo each lane to audition.
You can slip-edit to comp from the various takes.
The "comp'd" result will then show in the track.
