Hello PPLz,

I recently got Sonar X1, I'm just now understanding all the features and how it works.

Now that i'm more serious with the program i'm using the synth's but i have no MIDI Keyboard(I'm saving up to buy one). i downloaded a virtual keyboard, i have MIDI Yoke, and MIDI OX but when i go to the options menu for MIDI Devices the MIDI Yoke doesnt appear so i cant connect My Keyboard to Sonar X1,
does anyone know how to do this.

OK I'll bite.

FWIW I've never had much luck with Midi Yoke either.

This Virtual Midi Cable will give you 4 virtual ports, will work on any OS (32 bit only)

This one will give you one port but will work on a 64 bit OS too.

This midi keyboard will work with either.

Lets keep it simple so uninstall midi yoke and ox first.

Install either of the virtual midi cables above, whichever suits, remember they will be useful for routing midi between apps or within Sonar when you get a proper keyboard too. (I use the Maple VMC for different things all the time so I know it works well with Sonar.)

You may have to reboot at this point for the new midi ports to become available to the system.

Open Sonar, select  the Midi port(s) for the VMC in Sonar's midi device to make them available within Sonar. Close Sonar

Install the Virtual Keyboard and route it's output to your preferred virtual midi port.

Open Sonar, now if you insert a soft synth and select your midi port as the input for the midi track and the output going to the soft synth you should hear the soft-synth being triggered by the keyboard.

Now save up very quickly for a proper keyboard as this setup will drive you nuts in short order, although it can be handy for making edits say on a laptop if you are on the move.

Something like an M-Audio Oxygen 8 is a cheap starting point.

Virtual Midi Keyboard

Laptop QWERTY Keyboard
was used to laydown a drum track.
Session Drummer 3 was used for the test..
ASIO4ALL ran the laptops built in RealTek soundcard through headphones.

Low Latency.  (the kick was pretty much right on the beat)

Opens up some doors...when all you have is your Laptop.

Thanks for the question, and the answer.

Hey sorry to bump this old topic but it was the first that came up when i googled. Very new to sonar x2.. as in today.. just so i know and confirm.. are you saying there is no virtual midi qwerty keyboard built into the program like there is in every other DAW i have ever used? (sorry for that slightly smart remark, but i have never seen a daw without one, so it's weird IMO and i hope i am wrong!)

I've never felt the need to use a virtual midi qwerty keyboard, so I don't know if Sonar has one. Under what situation do you use it?

this will help you out as a noobie to midi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k83UVo1OiKA

but watch this one first, it will give you an idea on the 3 basic ways to use midi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juIu9Rlt6v8

it also explains that you cant record movements like clicking notes on the virtual keyboard.
or taping out beats on the session drummer kit will not record those samples.

these 2 vids are for people just getting started in midi (synth keyboards exc.)

good luck
