I must be missing something.  You don't want to open it and then double click on the tab to maximize it?
 
I always do that and it is an extra click initially, but then I just hit D to open and close the view as needed. 
 
For anyone with a V-Studio:  I have customized the buttons on the left to open the views I use most frequently: Staff View is where I work most and I have a Lyrics View button for recording vocals.
