Hi guys, just a little tip for those wanting to open older projects:

After having a few days' worth of heart attacks because I could not get a very important project to open in X2 which I mixed in December last year, I remembered it was done in X1....

And voila, it opened in an instant..

Hope that helps some of you! :O)

I've opened allot of X1 projects with X2 with no problems what so ever. Way over 100 of them that where started in X1 and that i have opened with X2 with no problems

Great to hear that man!
Might it be the hundred tracks, the hundreds of plugins or the external hardware sends that acted up? I don't know.
But mine did not want to open.

That's a little odd. Could it maybe be that the original project had VSTs or other elements that you haven't used in X2 yet? Like maybe they aren't included in your startup VST scan?

I've only opened a few old X1 projects in X2 (I only have a few anyway) and they were fine however I use very few third party thingamabobs and the ones I do I set up in X2 after I installed it. I'm assuming your effects/synth library is MUCH larger than mine.

Just a thought.

Not that I can help really but I'm curious... what happened when you tried to open them? An error? Crash? Nothing?

Cheers.

Oh... external stuff too. IDK about that type of thing but I could see how maybe routing might confuse the program. There were quite a few changes in X2 so maybe a really complex set up like that would get weirded out. Maybe an i/o template would help? Beyond my skillset for sure.

I've never had a problem opening up old projects in newer versions.

It is weird indeed - it takes forever to open ( a few minutes), then I get a totally white screen. Eventually - and I mean 5 minutes or so later - the file is loaded and seems normal. Hit play... another white screen, no response, etc etc. And it just won't play once open, if it ever gets there.

This particular album has very few Synths etc - mostly tons of vox and percussion. But lots of plugins such as Slate VCC. Also up to 15 busses per song.

I tried for days to get the stuff to open, even disabling all the other programs and firewalls on the PC etc.

In X1 it opens totally normally.

Okay, and I'm no expert here. I only go by what I've read here on the forum and my various other studies. The whitescreens are supposedly a symptom of the program waiting for the system to respond. I notice that you have X2 32 listed but Windows 7 64. Is this the case? If so is your X1 install 64 bit? That would probably explain it but I'd imagine you would know this considering your experience.

But ignoring that could it be somehow your VST paths are set up differently in X2 than they were in X1? Maybe you set up X1 or the VSTs themselves in a specific way and now X2 is scrambling around trying to find the correct path. I really don't know how that would work but if X2 is having a hard time connecting to the effects that would probably cause the whitescreens. You could try doing a save as to create a new version of the project, open it in safe mode then remove any plug ins you think might be causing the issue, save as again (and every time you remove something as a test). Then try opening it normally to see if/which plugs might be causing an issue. Then check the path to see if you are making X2 do backflips to get at them.

Sorry if that was worded strangely (as I said... no expert) but that's what comes to mind. Good luck.

Hi Beepster, all solid reasoning, and I must admit I hadn't considered the paths issue.

X2 was an upgrade, so it is supposed to have migrated all the settings AFAIK, but who knows....

I run both X1 and X2 in 32bit, on top of Win7 64, so that should not have caused any issues.

Thanks for the observations - I'll check it out when i get a chance!

Whew... glad it made sense. ;-)

Anyway, I'm sure you have your reasons for running 32 bit installs of Sonar over a 64 bit OS (lots of 32 bit plugs you do not want to bridge?) but obviously it'd likely be better to run the 64 bit versions if possible. Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers.
